Robyn and Scarlet are at the Toronto Pagan Conference this weekend!

If you are in the Toronto area this weekend, come and check out the talks being given by Melange's own staff!

Hand Maiden & Robin in Traditional Wicca (Scarlet)
Apprentice, assistant, student, maiden or youth: they served an important role in medieval times and throughout the evolution of Traditional Wicca. Usually only a female role but more and more we see a young man in the role, which is the Robin (or Fetch) of the Craft. We will explore history, mystery, knowledge and modern perspectives.
Saturday, March 1st, 1:15pm - Scandia room 2

On the path of the Healer: what it means to be responsible AND alternative (Robyn)
'Alternative healing' seems to be a catchall phrase for any type of treatment that is not considered to be a traditional part of Western Medicine. More and more we find advertisements for alternative healers who promise results, or methods that are less well known, and that are sometimes difficult to explain. How can one tell a healer from a fraud? What is it that makes one a healer, and how can one wishing to follow that path do so with honesty, grace and integrity? What is it like to be an "alternative" healer? Join us to discuss these topics, as well as to participate in an open question and answer period.
Sunday, March 2nd, 10am - Scandia room 1

For more information, check out http://www.torontopaganconference.com/

*** ALSO! If you can't make it this weekend, but would like an MP3 of the talks given at this conference, the link above should guide you toward how to get a hold of this upcoming CD! ***

Battling the Winter Blues

February is a peak time for people who suffer winter blues.
By this time of year, we are completely fed up with the cold and the dark and the damp of winter. It is time to do things to break the frustration. Here are some ideas!

Bring some light into your life!
Lighting your space up with extra light, opening the curtains or adding a couple extra candles to your altar will do just that. You can also start by changing the color of your clothing. Shift the shades to something lighter and brighter!

Cleanse out the negative!
Purge the clutter and banish he unused/unusables from your home and life. Start that spring cleaning EARLY! That way, by the time March comes, you will be ready for SPRING! Take a cleansing bath (we suggest our Men's or Women's Spiritual Cleansing bath salts). Do a sage smudging around your home and open all the windows for an hour. This will cleanse the negative as well as the old winter air from your home.

Bring in joy!
This time of year we see florists and garden centres bringing out their spring flowers. Daffodiles, crocuses, hyacinths are bright and playful flowers to bring into your home. They are just blooming. Hyacinth will also bring a light fresh and floral scent to make you smile! Buy and eat oranges or burn orange or citrus or sweet scented incense in your home. Listen to music that inspires you to write, draw, sing or dance. Get your body moving! Joining a gym to ready your self for summer fun is another great idea. Better yet, get your friends involved and go together! Do something completely random and fun!!

(one of our co-worked just bought gorgeous retro custome made roller skates!)

Mood Uplifters!
Rooibos teas
Mint and stevia flavoring
Vitamin B (complexes, especially B6 and B12)
Marshmallow root and ginko
Colours: yellow, orange, pink, peach, turquoise, sea-foam green, light blue
Laughing
Orris and orange and clove oil (navel chakra)

Transform your month. Today is a great day to do this.
Today is a Full Moon AND a Lunar Eclipse!

A spell to know the truth

A simple spell that is used to see the truth about a situation, or else to make others speak truly, is to use a lemon peel.

To begin, peel a lemon in a long single strip. Next, write your question, or the name of the person you wish to influence with this spell, on the inside of the peel (you may use any pen or ink to do so). You must now be patient and let the peel dry completely (sometimes this part can take around a week - but it's well worth the wait!). Once the peel has dried, burn the entire peel to activate the energies of the spell, and wait for the truth to be revealed!

Where Paganism & Christianity Collide Beautifully!

Saint Francis of Asssisi

His writings: Canticle of Brother Sun / The Praises of the Creatures
http://www.franciscan-archive.org/patriarcha/opera/canticle.html#CantSol

The Canticle of Brother Sun is the very first work of literature in the Italian language. St. Francis composed it most likely during the winter of 1224-5 A.D.—possibly while at the Church of San Damiano, in Assisi—as grace, born of suffering, urged him to praise and glorify the Most Holy Trinity even unto death. The Canticle of Brother Sun first appears in the historical record in a reference made by Bl. Thomas of Celano in his Vita Prima, written 1228 A.D.

Most High, Omnipotent, Good Lord,
Thine be the praises, the glory, and the honor and every blessing (cf. Apoc. 4:9.11).

To Thee alone, Most High, do they belong
and no man is worthy to mention Thee.

May Thou be praised, my Lord, with all Thy creatures (cf. Tob. 8:7),
especially mister brother sun,
of whom is the day, and Thou enlightens us through him.

And he is beautiful and radiant with a great splendor,
of Thee, Most High, does he convey the meaning

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for sister moon and the stars (cf. Ps. 148:3),
in heaven Thou has made them clear and precious and beautiful

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for brother wind,
and for the air and the cloudy and the clear weather and every weather (cf. Dan 3:64-65), through which to all Thy creatures Thou gives sustenance (cf. Ps. 103:13-14)

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for sister water,
who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste

May Thou be praised, my lord, for brother fire (cf. Dan 3:66),
through whom Thou illumines the night,
and he is handsome and jocund and robust and strong

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for our sister, mother earth, (cf. Dan 3:74)
who sustains us and governs,
and produces various fruits with colored flowers and green plants (cf. Ps 103:13-14)

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for those who forgive for the sake of Thy love 5 (cf. Mt 6:12),
and endure infirmity and tribulation

Blessed those who endure them in peace (cf. Mt 5:10),
because by Thee, Most High, will they be crowned

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for our sister, bodily death,
whom no man living can escape

Woe to those, who die in mortal sin:
blessed those whom she will find in Thy most holy desires,
because the second death will do them no evil (cf. Apoc 2:11; 20:6)

Praise and bless my Lord (cf. Dan 3:85),
and give Him thanks and serve Him with great humility!

Rootwork is spellbook that looks at component and magical work based on Black American folk beliefs. Rootwork is a form of American Hoodoo. The second part of the book is a compliation of spells that are easy to use.

Nine Worlds of Seid-Magic by Jenny Blain
$49.95 ISBN: 0415256518
Jenny Blain is among the few Pagan academic writers of out times. This book is a thorough look at Northern European Shamanism and magical practice. J Blain enlightens us aboutthe Seidr rites and rituals, the cosmology of the Northern Europeans, Seeresses and shamanistic practices, as well as cultural activites and ancester worship. This is a Routeledge Publication and highly recommended for anyone wanting to delve deeply into authentic culture and worship. Count of Routeledge to provide us with incredible academic studies, and count of Jenny Blain to bring Paganism to the academic forefront! A must have for any serious practitioner of Norse traditions.

The Wiccan Mystic by Ben Gruagach
$29.95 ISBN: 978-0615143118
What is a Mystery Religion? Is Wicca a Mystery Religion? B Gruagach explores these issues in this byeond Wicca 101 book. He explores the path of the mystic and the mysteries of initiation, Ethics and philosophy, theory and practice, ritual, and living a mystical life as a Wiccan. This is NOT a beginners book. For our growing religion, it is refreshing to see mre intermediate and advanced looks into the path we practice.

A Handbook for Wiccan Clergy by Kevin M Gardner
$33.95 ISBN: 978-1434339232
As Wicca grows, like any religion, it develops a clergy that serves the people. Yet, there has not been very much written for those on a clergy path. This book is divided five parts. The first part is a collection of ritual for rites of passage. Personally, I find that there are better books for this, but this is still a decent base outline of generic rituals. The second part explores myths and fables from a few different cultural backgrounds, including some meditations and rituals to connect with the themes in these stories. The third part examines methods of meditation. Both of these are very shallow looks, but good introductions. It is at part four where the book really gets interesting with "things to ponder". Here is challenges you to consider issues and beliefs and discuss and realize things for yourself. The last part addresses Pastoral Counselling. As a whole, I find it an excellent starting point for people wanting to consider the path of clergy. However, it is just that, a starting point.
