Holiday hours begin tomorrow!

It's been fairly crowded in here recently, as people have begun to feel the pressure of holiday shopping, and running out of time. To try to accomodate our clientele's needs, we've expanded our hours. As of tomorrow, and until Christmas, Melange Magique's physical location will be open until 9pm on weeknights! Our weekend hours will remain 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 12pm to 5pm on Sunday.

Drop on by! We'd love to see you.

Merry Sinterklass!

I only recently learned about Sinterklass, but it's an absolutely sweet holiday. Celebrated mainly in the Netherlands, Sinterklass, celebrated on the eve of December 5th and during the day of December 6th, is the day when St. Nicholas ('Sinterklass') arrives with his assistant 'Black Pete' from Spain, with a book to take notes on how all the children have behaved all year. If they have been good, they get chocolates and gifts, and if they have been naughty they get lumps of coal. The worst children got stuffed in his bag and taken back with him to Spain.

To all our Dutch friends out there, a very merry Sinterklass!

Blessings from Natives

We have discovered a new artisan from the Native American community. Erin from South Ontario came by with incredible silver sage smudges (6-inch blended bundles and 2-ing mini bundles), hand-stitched deerskin medicine pouches (small for little talismans and large belt pouches), as well as the most incredible sacred feather box with all inlaide wood designs and hand carving. Beautiful, actually stunning, gifts for Yule. Come check them out before they are all gone, as quantities are very limited.

More! More! More!

The endless unpacking, as new stock arrives, is akin to unwrapping a ceaseless parade of Christmas gifts. There has been lots of 'ooh'ing and 'ahh'ing, all around. Since Tuesday, we have reveived a huge shipment of, you guessed it, more fairy statues! Cute and affordable, these ones. We've also gotten in a bunch of amazing birch stars and moons, all hand made from completely natural materials. Some of the moons even have moss on them! How cool is that?!! Plus, scented candles with adorable pendants on them (most seem to be made with some kind of abalone shell inset into them, a few are celtic, and a few others are asian in style)

Phew! The store is getting pretty full!

On my end of things, the shipping department has been going crazy, getting weborders together and out. Please be sure to check the holiday delivery dates on our site when you order, to be sure you've chosen a method of delivery that will get you the gifts you purchase on time for the holidays!

Oooh, shiny...

We have scrying mirrors back in stock as of today!! So cool!

We have a few new kinds of stones available in store (mini-geodes, aquamarines, jet, gorgeous new quartz crystal points...).

We have more fairy statues to put out (I know! I'm very pleased about it too!)

AND, most exciting, we have a really amazing sale, just in time for the holidays: Buy 3 fairyballs and GET 3 fairyballs. Seriously. Now, the 3 you pick all have to be the same size, but just imagine how awesome your holiday tree (Christmas tree, yule log, Channukah bush...) will look covered in these gorgeous orbs! I'd get a set in each size myself...

Changing of the seasons...

This week we swept away the cobwebs and fallen leaves of Samhain and began to decorate for Yule. Out came the tree, the tinsel and the garlands. It's only a matter of time before there is festive music playing and the warm-fuzzy spirit of holiday shopping maddness...ahh, Christmas.

As much as it might be a hectic time of year, I've always rather enjoyed working in the store during the holiday rush. We get all sorts of new items in, just for the holiday, and we often get to be creative with gift ideas and helping people to shop for their loved ones. (Besides, any time we get to redecorate the store, it's fun to come in to see what else has changed!)

Come in next week to see the winter wonderland we make out of the shop!

Oh..I almost forgot! For those who have been waiting, sage smudges are back in stock at long last!!

Thank you!

I just want to personally thank everyone who contributed to the success of my Shave to Save fundraising campaign. Thanks to your generosity, I raised $2137 for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. I'm very proud of me, and I'm very proud of you, too.

Come in to see my new do (or lack thereof!).

Samhian and media attention +++

Well the interviews thus far have been great. On Thursday last week, I was interviewd by Global as one of the 5-part episodes they are doing for this Halloween week. Hobbes from the MPRC was interviewed by a French McGill newspaper that same day. On Sunday he was aired on CBC radio for yet another interview.

Yesterday I was invaded by a HUGE class from Dawson College for an introduction to Wicca and Paganism. I was so nervous because I had no idea what to expect or what to do do. I had no idea if it was an interview or a tour or a guest lecture or what. I had the opportunity to take them into the classroom for 20min for Wicca & Paganism 101 CONDENSED! They were a great group!

Today a different class (same teacher) is coming in for yet the same as yesterday, however i am alone on the floor so they will unfortunately not get the amazing condensed lecture that the first group got. *sigh* I still have no idea what I will say or what they hope to learn from the xpereince. I hope they are as interested/interesting and understanding as yesterday's class. I have to manage the store at the same time as they are here.

Then next Thursday I meet a student for an interview at Loyola. And... I have recommended that one of the Dawson students come Thursday night to talk to Hobbes for her paper.

This has been a busy Halloween with media and interviews and such, busier than last year!

And we had fun dressing up all weekend too!
Have a happy and safe Halloween and Samhain!

Samhain Crunch!

As Samhain fast approahes, so does the deadline for one of our co-managers. She is participating in the Mix96's Breast Cancer Shave to Save. We are supporting her in this noble endeavor as much as we can. She still needs to raise $700 more dollars to meet the goal of $2000. We have till Sunday at 5pm. She then goes to be shaved Monday October 30th, just in time for Samhain.

It is important to think of those you have passed at this time of year. Breast cancer has touched so many lives.

In this Samhain cruch, the media is also getting involved. They want to hear all about Pagans, Witches, Occult and the myths and tales around Halloween and Samhain. Several interviews have already been done and where possible we have mentioned our desire to give back to the community at large. We offer many different services from spiritual counselling, helping with rites of passage and seasonal ritual, providing advice and supplied for spellcrafting, and hosting clairvoyants & workshops and even a Pagan school.

This year we have also done alot to give to the community in other ways. During our 15th Anniversary Weekend (our Mabon event), we held events and activities to raise funds for the SPCA. For Samhain, we working towards raising $2000 for breast cancer research. For Yule we are engaging in the Children's Christmas Shoebox project. We will have more information on this later on.

Have a happy and safe Halloween and Samhain. Remember your ancestors and thank them. You are here and who you are because of them.

Blessings from all the staff at Le Melange Magique!

Samhain, season of filmcrews

Every year, around this time, we get a host of calls from television and radio stations, wanting to do interviews and shows about the store, witches, witchcraft, Samhain and Halloween. Most of the stations know to call in advance to book a day and time to come in, but it's happened that we've just had film crews walk right in, cameras running, in the past. Given that this is one of the busiest times of year for us, you can only imagine the chaos of trying to work around film crews and a store full of customers.

This year we've managed the incredible feat of having everything organized, at least. So far, so good. We'll see if people stick to the plan next week, as the holiday itself approaches. (Usually thats when we get the most last minute calls).

When we find out about what times and stations we'll be airing on, I'll do my best to have someone post it here so you can all tune on in!

More than halfway there!

That's right! I have now received over $1000 in pledges for my Shave to Save campaign to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. I've been so moved by the generosity and consideration I've received thus far, but don't stop now! The goal is in sight, but only you can help make it happen!

I'll be collecting pledges and donations up until October 29th. The big shave is still scheduled for October 30th at 8am on Montreal's Mix 96.

Beware the beasties!..and a fundraising update!

I came in to the store this morning to find that one (or all) of the cats had torn into a bag of catnip and spread it all over the floor. Tequila was rolling about in it merrily until I shooed him away to sweet up the mess, and Little Kitty has been zipping across the store frantically. Knicky, on the other hand, has been entirely zen about the whole thing, dozing comfortably by the water fountain. Very funny to watch the three of them.

I have great news! I'm a third of the way to my fundraising goal of $2000 for Breast Cancer Research. It's not too late to get in your donations. I'll be collecting everything up by the 29th, so that I have it counted and prepared to hand in for when I go to get shaved on the morning of the 30th. (I think it bothers me more that I have to get up so early that day then it does that I'm getting my head shaved!)

As an incentive, we're offering free packs of our mystery blend incense for every donation of $5 or more. A donation of $5 or more gets you a pink ribbon as well.

PLUS, my loverly co-worker Sam has come up with a contest, too. There will be a jar of pink M&Ms on the counter as of this weekend. For a donation (amount to be determined), you may enter the contest to guess how many M&Ms are in the jar, and on the 29th, it will be revealed who is closest to the correct number, thereby winning the jar of yummy chocolates. And, clever Sam, the pink M&Ms are also a part of the Breast Cancer Awareness month, so even the proceeds of buying them gave money to the cause.

Zen and then some

The lover of Asian things in me is ecstatic with the new things that have arrived in the one day I was out of the store!

We received magnet hematite stones and stone offering bowls.

We also received elemental candles with the Chinese symbols for the elements (earth/air/fire/water) and zen gardens of all styles, even some with little Buddhas. They are perfect for little meditation spaces like the one I have at home!

AND we received a ton of new calendars.

We were very busy here at the store setting up the new displays, as well as preparing for the Con*cept Convension that we will be at for the weekend. I hope it goes well there for us. I will be there tomorrow instead of in the store.

I read the Pretty in Pink blog that Roo put up and got to see all the infos on the Shave to Save that she is doing. I really commend her for this. It is a great cause. I now have my little ribbon. I am encouraging everyone to donate. We need to raise $2000. Come help support her and this cause.

Tonight the French CMS class is going on. It is the first time I get to overhear it! I am so proud of Nathalie for taking on this challenge. There is so little available in French for learning Wicca and Paganism. They are learning elements and some energy work today.

So back to this ZEN thing. We have wonderfully scented ZEN incense. The blend is subtle and great for meditation. In this very busy world, it is important to occasionally take some time for just you to sit and relax. Be ZEN. Meditate. BE! We often forget to take some time for us in our rush rush lives.

Take a ZEN moment in these simple ways:
- sit and drink tea in silence
- watch the sun rise
- sit in bed with some incense burning and the lights out for 5 min, letting your head clear
- give someone a long long hug

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Pretty in Pink

Toward the end of the day yesterday, a representative from the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation came by the store to give me donation cans, posters, pamphlets and stuff to aid with my fundraising campaign for the Shave to Save.

The MPRC (Montreal Pagan Resource Center) has pledged to donate $50 to me as well! Hurrah! This brings my total so far to $250 raised!

If you would like to know more about how to donate, please don't hesitate to contact us. You can give cash, cheques or credit card numbers. All cheques should be made payable to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, and must be received before 5pm on October 29th.

If you want to tune in, I will be live on the radio at 8am, October 30th on Montreal's Mix96.

Heathens

We just received an excellent book called "Galdrbok: Practical Heathen Runecraft, Shamanism and Magic" by Johnson & Wallis. It looks fantastic for anyone deeply into Northern Magic traditions (Asatru, Norse Paganism, Heathen Trads). There was a previous book by the title of Galdrbok, but it was no where near this detailed. It explores runes, Norse cosmology, trance work, the Galdr ritual, magical practice, and more. It is excellent for all levels, though is not a "light" read. There are lots of ancient translated poems, details on ritual design and initiation, as well as extensive historical accounts. A must have if this is your path.

While perusing this book, I was asked what a Heathen was. My reply was a non-Judeo-Christian. But I know it is actually more than that. Because the definition of Pagan can also be that. So off to www.dictionary.com I went.

HEATHEN: an unconverted individual of a people that do not acknowledge the God of the Bible; a person who is neither a Jew, Christian, nor Muslim; pagan.

HEATHEN: an irreligious, uncultured, or uncivilized person.

HEATHEN: heathenish, barbarous. Heathen, pagan are both applied to peoples who are not Christian, Jewish, or Muslim. Heathen is often distinctively applied to unenlightened or barbaric idolaters, esp. to primitive or ancient tribes: heathen rites, idols. Pagan, though applied to any of the peoples not worshiping according to the three religions mentioned above, is most frequently used in speaking of the ancient Greeks and Romans: a pagan poem; a pagan civilization. Philistine; savage.

HEATHEN: not acknowledging the God of Christianity and Judaism and Islam, a person who does not acknowledge your God

Hmmm... I am not sure that was much help at clarifying the definition. It certainly does not capture the meaning behind the word for those who self-identify as heathens.

Perhaps someone who does could comment with their definition?

What is a HEATHEN? What does it mean to be one?

Giving Thanks, a ritual

Having grown up in a family that never celebrated Thanksgiving, today means something a little different to me then eating turkeys and gathering with loved ones. Instead, in the past few years, I have chosen this day as a time to express my appreciation for the many blessings in my life. I have turned it into something of a simple ritual, but it is something anyone can do.

Find a private space, and dim the lights. Burn your favorite incense and get comfortable. On a piece of parchment, take your time and write out ten things you are grateful for. You can give as much or as little detail as you want.

I keep these papers from year to year, to be able to look back on all the bright and wonderful things and people that have come into my life. It makes a wonderful keepsake, and a reminder, for darker days, when you need to have something comforting to hold on to.

Robyn will participate in this year's Shave to Save

I woke up this morning absolutely certain. I'm going to do it. I've emailed Mix 96 and left voice messages as well. So I'm on their list. And if I don't hear from them I'm gonna drop by on Tuesday or Wednesday this week (they're right around the corner from Melange, did you know that? I didn't know that...)

Please contact me if you'd like to donate. It can be by cash, cheque or credit card. You can also come by the store to drop off your donations there. I'll be collecting funds between now and whenever this shindig goes on. All funds go to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, (meaning, any cheques should be made payable to them as well). Tax receipts will be issued by the Mix for donations of $20 or more.

For those who know me well: please also consider donating to this worthy cause instead of giving me anything for my birthday. If you have to choose, I'd rather you donate. The goal is to have a minimum of $2000 raised. I'd personally like to raise more then that. Help me make it happen, people.

For more information about the Mix 96 shave to save, visit their website.

Lookie! Pictures of the new stock!

I came into the store on my day off today with my cat Tsuki. Sorry no pictures of him from this excursion to the outside world. But i did bring my camera so I could get some pictures of the incredible decor that our staff did in the store for our Halloween/Samhain season, as well as the new goodies that have come into the store. So... if you haven't been in yet, here are a long list of pictures to entice you to come visit while the stock is still here. It is apparently selling fast!

Taquilla and KnickKnack

The cats are not for sale... hehehe... And when next I bring my camera to the store, I will try to get a shot of Little Kitty for you all to see. He is very elusive. And he can sometimes be mistaken for KnickKnack since they look almost the same.

Halloween Special

For the month of October, all our 5 inch cauldrons will be 20% off!
Regular price: $26.95
Now: $21.50 !

Yay! More new stock!

Yesterday we received two HUGE shipments, and given that I'm in charge of shipping and such, I got to unpack it all. I tell you, it was like Christmas.

First, there were cauldrons. Cauldrons in many different sizes, cast in iron and pre-seasoned so as to be ready for immadiate use. They're good for camping, too! (Pity I didn't have one for my trip last weekend. Maybe for next summer...hm...). The larger sizes all come with a bag to carry them in too. Very cool.

Next, a HUUUUGE order of just plain nifty stuff. Books of Shadows, Keychains with kitties and owlies and dragons on them, boxes, hourglasses, a maiden-mother-crone mirror, pentacles, dreamcatchers, statuettes, and chalices. Very very pretty. I've been told that the staff isn't allowed to put any aside until after the customers are given time to buy things, but I'm telling you now, I've already got a lot of gifts picked out in my head for birthdays and Yuletide gifting... And for me!

Prosperity

The Chinese believe that it is important to have living plants in the home to keep the Ch'i moving and alive. What better way than to also promote prosperity! The Chinese Money Tree is commonly used to draw money into a home or business. Its 5-leaf stems and bamboo-like trunk remind us that the 5 elements come together to look delicate but are actually very strong. This is a hardy plant that grows well here in Canada both indoors and out (but bring it in for the winter). It likes all kinds of lighting making it ideal for any indoor location. Water it well with good drainage and let the soil become dry before watering again. The plant will actually tell you when it is thirsty by being droopy. Oh! It is also non-toxic should your pets eat it... but damage to the plant can indicate damage to your finances. So please be careful.

I think I will have to get one for our store. The photo below is the one next to my work computer at home.

Rainy Day Spells

Here is where the 'of Shadows' part of our Blog begins!

A simple spell for rainy days: (ie, to make the rain go away.)

For this spell you will need Broomtops (an herb), charcoal, air oil and a yellow or light blue candle.

Do you remember the childhood rhyme of 'Rain, rain, go away, come again another day'? This spell is very much in a similar spirit, and you can even use this rhyme as a little chant when you are invoking the spirits.

Go outside and set up your charcoal on a heatproof plate or in a heatproof container or bowl. Light it, and sprinkle the broomtrop over it. The the smoke flow over you and up into the sky. annoint your candle with the oil and light it as well, asking the spirits of air to accept your offering, and to blow the stormclouds away for today*. Once the herb is burnt, and the candle is out, bury the ashes and any left over wax in the earth to ground the energy you've raised.

* It is important to be specific in your spell in naming your location (where you want the storm to go away from) as well as the duration of the spell (how long you want the storm to go away for. Never say 'forever', though. Think of the reprecussions of never having any rain!

October Workshops

Please remember, just like CMS, prepayment for a workshop is necessary to secure your place. Your payment must be in at least 48 hours before the workshop. The workshops require a minimum of three preregistered students to be held. Less than three students will mean the class is cancelled and the students will be called and refunded. If a student wishes to cancel their registration, they must do so in advance in order to be refunded. Cancellations at the last minute or no-shows cannot be refunded.

Now that the nitty-gritty stuff is said... here is a list of the great upcoming workshops!

Developing Psychic Abilities
(Catharine & Claudia)
Being able to tell the difference between intuition,
prediction, clairvoyance, predictive dreams, deja
vu, gut feelings etc. is essential to developing your
abilities. We will discuss the various ways psychic
abilities manifest and do hands on exercises to test
your present level. At the end we will have a
message circle where each participant will receive
messages from Spirit with Catharine and Claudia.
Thursday October 5th, 7-9 pm 30$

Astrology Intensive Workshop
(Catharine)

Come learn the essentials of astrology...its history
and evolution, the basics of each sign and planet,
how to interpret the planets in the signs, the
ascendant or rising sign and much more. Role
playing and discussion will empower you to
interpret your chart and that of others
Saturday October 7th, 2-4 pm 45$

Ancestral Shrines Workshop
(Scarlet)

Samhain/Halloween is a time to honour our
ancestors. In this workshop, learn how to set up
an ancestral shrine. We will discuss various types
and their decor and offerings. We will also discuss
what NOT to put on them. Just because our loved
ones are gone in body, it does not mean their
spirit has left us. They are often still around,
interested in our lives and watching over us. What
better was to honour them than with a shrine
dedicated just to them!
Friday October 20th, 7-9 pm 30$

Spellcrafting Workshop
(Arin)

Join Arin Murphy-Hiscock, author of Power
Spellcraft for Life, for a workshop on spellcrafting!
Saturday October 21st, 3-6 pm $60

Livres
Voici quelques exemples:

- "Dracula - The connoiseur's guide" par Leonard Wolf
- "The pagan book of Halloween" par Gerina Dunwich
- "The vampire watcher's handbook - A guide for slayers" par Constantine Gregory

Merry Mabon!

As if the weather itself were not ample reminder, Saturday will mark the Autumn equinox, and the harvest festival of Mabon. At a time when the light and dark are in balance with one another, we celebrate the second harvest of the year, and a time of introspection of what one has harvested in themselves over the past year. What seeds did you sew that bore you fruit? What endeavors were successful? Perhaps it is time to reconsider certain projects you have undertaken and let those 'fields' lie fallow for a season before you try again. It is also a good time to begin thinking ahead to the coming winter, and what you will need to prepare in order to endure the darker, colder months.

New Harvest / Autumn WynterGreene has arrived!
The new WynterGreene issue has arrived! It's chalk-full of interesting articles, such as Embracing the Darker Aspect of Brighid by Arin Murphy-Hiscock, Silence and Symphonies by Amanda Strong and Ancestral Shrines: Honoring Those Who Have Gone Before by our own Scarlet! With beautiful cover art by Annika Diehl, it is a good read and reminder of the turning of the seasons.

Let there be light!

I have spliced my very first wire! Go me! The celtic jewelry case is now lit anew.

My father would be so proud.

Wow!

I am away for a few days and the store explodes!! I came in to discover feathers and more feathers and MORE feathers and calendars GALORE! And then new books... and THEN... new NOTECARDS!! Yup... we got new things in again. The feathers are gorgeous. I am so pleased with this company as their colours are vibrant and clear. I also love the owl and pheasant feathers. I wish I could buy some and take them home, but I have two cats who think feathers are the new favorite food treat. *pout* So today I made these discoveres and enjoyed looking through the new notecards as I put them out.

While doing my store walkthrough, I saw (for the secind time today, the first being my drive in) Police Officers... on HORSEBACK!! Neat!

Ok, back to the store stuff.

New books. I must tell you about some of the new books that came in. I wish I could tell you about all of them, but there is not enough room. That... and... someone bought out several of the new ones before I came in today. So what have we got?

Dana Paxson's "aking Up the Runes"
One of the most complete and thorough looks at Runes and their uses in spells, magic, divination and lore that I have ever seen. I know it is not new per se... but I have not seen it in the store before. I is definately on my wishlist!

"Kabbalistic Cycles" and "Kabbalistic Handbook" by Joseph Lisiewski
For the hard core Ceremonialist, these two books are supported by Christopher Hyatt. They are concise but well-researched. I hope someone in the field of Ceremonial Magic or Golden Dawn can review them and get back to us.

Sally Morningstar's "The Art of Wiccan Healing"
This one caught my eye. She was part of the production team for the Wicca Pack divination cards. She teaches and is a healer herself. It looks at various aspects of healing that Wiccan incorporate and how to incorporate them. It is a simple practical guide, though not a very in depth book on healing.

Ted Andrew's "The Art of Shapeshifting"
For those of you who have loved his other book on animal lore and magic, this is his newest! It looks at both historical and modern shapeshifting and techniques. This is NOT a beginner's book. It is the next step after understanding the meaning of totems and animal spirits. Excellent... must add this to my wishlist when I get home tonight!

Christopher Penscak's "Mystic Foundation"
Yet another great book by Penczak! We are still waiting for his last "temple" series book, but in the meantime he has givin us this to wet our appatites. It springboards from his other works and goes off onto the tangent of mysticism from many different religious traditions and what we can learn from them. My wishlist is getting long...

"Ritual Craft" by Amber and Azrael Arynn K
They do not publish works often, but when they do, it is well worth getting a copy! In Amber K's first book she had a small chapter on crafting rituals. Now we have a huge in depth book on ritual design that rivals D. Lipps "Elements of Ritual" book. Yup... my wishlist is growing.

Silver RavenWolf's "MindLight"
This is her new book on the "Secrets of Energy, Magic and Manifestation". Here she leaps into the world of magic and Quantum Physics. My first recommendation would be to watch the film "What the Bleep Do You Know?" and then read this book. And while you are at it... bug us at the store to host a Quantum Magic workshop again!!

Richard Webster's "Color Magic for Beginners"
Color is so important to us. We use colors for our candles, aura work, chakras and much much more. So here is a great beginner's book on the use of color in magic. Webster is becoming almost as good a basic staple in Pagan beginner and foundational texts as Scott Cunningham.

"Witches' Sabbats" by Mike Nichols
Nichols work on the Sabbats has come HIGHLY recommended and this is the first time I have had the chance to see it in print!

"The Witches' Dictionary" by Victoria Danann
This is a little booklet that is a concise dictionary of Pagan and Witch terminology... a dictionary.

Phyllis Curott's "The Love Spell"
This is her newest book written like a novel/autobiography about love in her life. If you loved her previous works, I am sure you will love this one. "An erotic memoir of spiritual awakening".

And now I come to a close as the Level 1 CMS class arrives. They are still going strong and sound like a great group! It is one of the larger classes. It had to be locked down from further registrants. Anyone else interested will have to put their names on the waiting list for the next session in February.

Did you know...

...that you can have rune sets custom carved for you here at Melange Magique? I got to carve a set of runes for a client today on a set of polished river stones. I'm very pleased with the results, too!

This service is only available to in-store clients (meaning, they cannot be ordered over the web or by phone) and is a new feature that we are offering. We also custom carve stone talismans and symbols, too.

2007 Calendars have arrived and MORE new stock too!

Today we were flooded with boxes and boxes of calendars and agendas for 2007. There are so many in that I can't list them all, but a few notable favorites are the Llewellyn Witches' Calendar & Agenda, the Llewellyn Astrological Calendar & Agenda, The We'Moon Calendars & Agendas, The Seasons of the Witch Calendar & Agenda... and MANY more! We had a rough time making a display to fit them all, but we managed it and it looks fantastic.

We also received a whole bunch of new books today (three whole shelves full of new titles to explore!)

We also receeived NEW colors and styles of feather quills: natural Eagle-Owl feathers, peacock feathers (both long and short), and some other fancy styles as well.

In addition, there are also strands of bone skull beads, new stone pendants, new chakra wands, semi-precious stone rune sets, stone obelisks and energy generators and probably even more new stock that I'm forgetting too.

What a day!

Nouveau look!

All Dressed up for Fall Equinox

Today was a FUN day! Staff were all dressed in fancy medievalish fall colours. Some of us were not even "on duty" but showed dressed up anyways! The store is also getting dressed up!! Out came the Fall Decor box full of cloths for shelves and tables and full (like stuff packed full) of viny orange and yellow leaves.

The store houses a few different services for the community:

Shrine
There is a public shrine near the front window next to the fountain.

MPRC
The Montreal Pagan Resource Centre is the store space donation to this organization that serves the community with its little library and knowledgeable volunteers. They will let you sit and read, chat and discuss, seek counselling and advice, help you coordinate events and rituals, and keep you up to date with the activities going on in the Pagan Community. The volunteers have already started trickling in to hold open shifts. The MPRC will officially open in October. Go to their website to keep up to date with them.
http://www.paganuniverse.com/mprc/

CMS: Classroom
Crescent Moon School is back in full swing. This year the store houses its new classroom space as set up by the staff of CMS. It has a huge Marker board (a donation from the Level 2's several years ago), tables, chairs, TV & VCR (curtesy of the MPRC) & DVD (this uear's newest addition). Currently there are 3 classes going on: 2 Level 1 classes (English-Wednesdays 6-9pm & French-Fridays 6-9pm) and a Level 2 class Saturdays 11am-2pm. This great classroom is also available for discussion groups (sometimes hosted by the MPRC), seminars and workshops. The new list of public workshops will be available soon. If you want to rent the space for an activity, just come see Robyn or Scarlet here at the store.

And so we are getting all dressed up to have a great new season.
See ya there!

Fundraiser Success!

Last weekend was the store's 15th anniversary, and so we decided to celebrate by holding a weekend long fundraiser for one of our favorite charities, the SPCA. From friday evening through to Sunday afternoon we had workshops, a drumming session, a book signing (with the lovely Arin Murphy-Hiscock), and a divine-in.

We got this e-mail from the SPCA co-ordinator that I thought I would share:
I must say, you do have a very generous clientele and at the end of the weekend we received $380 in donations. Thank you very much for all your help.
A very big and heartfelt thanks goes out to everyone involved for making our anniversary fundraiser a success.

Store Cats

Because you asked!

We have three store cats. Two older cats and one brand new arrival.

KnickKnack
She is our eldest at 13 years of age. She is a brown tabby with fine this stripes and the most stunning bright green eyes. She loves to be picked up and cuddles, especially if you are a guy. She likes kids too if they are not too rough, but will scratch if they torment her or pull her tail. He full name is KnockKnack-Pattywack-Give-a-cat-a-Spanking. She was that kind of cat that liked it. Now though she is growing old. She suffers both hyperthyroidism and siezures. She is on meds and special food. There some periods where we were seriously worried for her life, but now things have balanced out and she is doing quite well. She is mellow, but alert.

Tequilla
He is our BIG FAT brown tabby boy with a white muzzle and white paws. He is just a little younger KnickKnack (11 or 12). He was brought to the store when it moved from 1954 to 1928 St-Catherine West. On that moving day during the after move party, he fell asleep in a box where the tequilla bottle had been. Thus he is named Tequilla! He is shy of hands when you try to pet him, but loves to butt and rub heads. He is whiny and complaintive when you pet and cuddle him... but it is all a facade, for you can hear him purring just the same.

Little-Kitty
Yes... that is his name, poor thing. He is our newest arrival. And... he was named by the owner's 4-yr-old daughter. He was a stray they had adopted, but one of their cats just didn't tolerate the new guy. He is now a year old and has joined the store family. He now wears a harness and bell so we can hear him moving about. He started out very timid but is growing bolder. He is extremely affectionate. Today he was feeling bold enough to wander the main store area while clients were about. I am sure he will become quite a regular and be well loved by all! Little-Kitty looks almost identical to KnickKnack, easy to mix them up, but he does not have her stunning green eyes.

Feline Dynamics
On the whole, the cats are getting along remarkably fine. Though the new guy is more energetic and wants to play. He is fast discovering that his elders are not particularly keen on this notion. They don't want to play with him. At least they are not mean to him and vice versa.

New Arrivals!

So many new things have arrived in the store its difficult to know where to begin!

Feather Quills
We have received a number of new styles of writing quills this week. I'm particularly enamoured with the burgundy colored large quills with brass fittings myself, but we also have smaller dip-quills and even large fanciful pheasant feather quills, too.

New Mortars and Pestles
Today we received grey marble mortars and pestles as well as -beautiful- wooden mortars and pestles. Worth a look at for anyone interested in crushing and mixing herbs, resins and other spell components.

Rams' Horns
Decorate your altar with these genuine ram horns to honor the God in all His forms.

Suede covered Journals
These new journals will make ideal books of shadows! Very fancy. I may want to pick up a few as gifts for friends (they're so cheap! Only $10.95 each!) so you had best come get yours before I take them all myself.

Little Kitty
That's right! Melange now has a new cat in store! Come and meet our newest member of the family. He loves to be cuddled and seems endlessly fascinated with exploring the store's hard to get-at nooks and crannies. He's also quite the talker! Meow at him and you can almost be certain he'll meow back!

NEW BLOG

AHA! At last the store has a blog for all our little secrets! Journals of the really nifty things that arrive at the store and the bits of interesting activities, news, products, etc. will get posted here by staff... hopefully on a daily basis.

STAY TUNED!
