Scarlet's Reviews on New Books

Magical Self Defence: A Quantum Approach to Warding
By: Kerr Cuhulain
$18.50 ISBN# 9780738712192
This trusted Canadian author has written such great books as Law Enforcement Guide to Wicca, Wiccan Warrior, and Full Contact Magick. He was a police officer in British Columbia and has come out with yet another amazing book of protection and energy work. This is not a book for the beginner (much like Full Contact Magick), but a book for the intermediate wanting to explore new or different techniques.

Crafting Wiccan Traditions: Creating a Foundation for Your Spiritual Beliefs & Practices
By: Raven Grimassi
$18.50 ISBN# 9780738711089
While I would not normally recommend anything by Grimassi except Strega tradition books, this one is a pleasant surprise. It walks the reader through how to clearly define your spiritual practice. It is an excellent book for people wanting or considering starting a coven. While other coven-related books look at how to run a coven and manage the ins and outs and troubles and challenegs, this book is more fountational. I would recommend starting with this book and then moving to one of the other great coven books (like Amber K's Covencraft or Judy Harrow's Wicca Covens).

Llewellyn's 2008 Witches' Companion
$11.50 ISBN# 9780738715606
Llewellyn has produced its own Spring to Spring almanac chalk full of amazing articles on contemporary issues by an incredible selection of authors. The last section of the book contains a set of calendars and monthy advice. There is a Moon Void of Course chart, a list of eclipses and full moon, and some space for personal notes. All in all, I am very impressed. I think this is coming home with me today.

Priestess of the Forest: A Druid Journal
By: Ellen Evert Hopman
$21.95 ISBN# 9780738712628
This is a trade paperback novel. While it is a work of fiction, it is considered educational fiction. This means Hopman hopes to teach people about the path of the druid priestess thru the eyes of a fictional character. She provides you with some excellent reference help: Glossary of Gaelic words, a list of further reading for historical and cultural reference, and a fascinating intervew that she had done and had transcribed into the book about her work on it.

Emru Townsend is a dear friend of staff here at the store. Brother of a former employee and supporter of our activities and events.

In mid-December, Emru was diagnosed with leukemia, and a condition called monosomy 7. Due to the monosomy 7, he has an increased risk of the leukemia coming back, no matter how successful chemotherapy is.

Ethnic minorities are severely underrepresented in the bone marrow registry. Remember, a match can come from anywhere, only a small blood sample is required and time is not on his side.

Spring Cleaning Traditions from Sacrlet's Family

Hi all,

Happy Ostara! I wanted to share with you some things that have been part of my family for generations. They happen around this time of year. Ever since I could remembers, we had certain activities that happened on or close to Ostara, Spring Equinox.

At dawn of the Equinox, our German greatgrandmother used to have the family open all the windows till sunset. My grandmother still does this, as does my mom and I. Did you open your windows? Why do we do it? When I asked, the response from my grandmother was so that we can air out the stuffy winter air and all the dark feelings from winter and freshen up the home with new Spring air.

This is followed by several days of thorough spring cleaning. And that spring cleaning must be done in a very specific way! We start at the front door. Everything gets lifted and moved and scrubbed clean into every nook and cranny "so the winter imps can't hide". We work counter clockwise around the home. Garbage goes out the back door. Never out the front. And never have trash coming in through the front door. At the end of the thorough cleaning, the windows are to be taken out of the frames and also cleaned "so you can see the Spring Maiden in all her glory blooming and that joy can come into your home easily."

This was followed by incense to purify the home. My family was Christian and the priest used to come to the home when my Grandmother was young. Today, we do this ourselves. You can use sage or cedar or lavender or rose, or even a frankincense and myrrh blend. I use an herbal resin blend for Ostara that is made at Le Melange Magique.

After purifying the home, it was crutial to purify yourself as well. Each person in the home took a cleansing bath with salt in the water. I use Women's Spiritual Cleansing Bath Salt from Le Melange Magique. There is a Men's Spiritual Cleansing Bath Salt, too. Both have to be requested from the store's Apothecary. Cleansing the spirit also involves the non-physical. Taking some time to meditate and pray, to cleanse the mind and soul of negativity accumulated over the winter.

So the home has been purified and the body and spirit cleansed. What's next? BLESSING!

By tradition, that means bring positve things into the home. Something new and fresh. Something green and alive. We would sprinkly water that has some sweet blessing oil and floating flowers around the home. Sprinkling into each corner clockwise about the home. Then I brought in fresh flowers and new potted plants. Flowers and greenery bless my home in every room!

We also started to rearrange our home for new things to come this year. What do you want to come into your home? Is your home set up to welcome that energy? Are you starting a school project? Do you need to design a study area for that? What about a new business? Time to renovate the home office. We are doing more coven work in my livingroom and the home library needs changing, so we are renovating the Livingroom. Are you expecting new life? A baby? We are making room for that energy in our home as well, so that mean shifting the second office to the basement and designing a baby room! What seeds of hope are you planting? Don't just talk about it. DO IT! Plant those seeds, grow that garden!

We concluded by making the foyer/stairway welcoming by placing a corner shelf and decorating it for the season. Flowers, scented candles, items for each element, an offering bowl filled with chocolate eggs for each passersby to take as they come or go from our home.

Bright blessings!

To recap:
Purify your home by spring cleaning and burning pruification incense.
Purify your body with cleansing bath salts.
Purify the soul with meditation and prayer.
Bless the home with scented water.
Bring in positive energy by bring something new into your home.
Create the space you need to bring in what you hope for.
Plant a garden, start the seeds inside your home.
Make your space feel welcoming for guest, but also welcoming to you.
It is your home, you should feel like you want to be there.

Lastly, you might want to place protections about your home to reduce the negativity from returning. We will use Protection Oil and trace sigils with it on the door and window frames around our home.

Have a very Happy Spring. Share the joy!

Ostara

Ostara, the Spring Equinox also known as the Vernal Equinox. On this first day of spring, the hours of daylight and night are equal; in balance, with light gaining. This Sabbat celebrates the mating of the young & fertile newly awoken Goddess with the fertile Sun God. Their union will be celebrated at Beltaine, and nine months from now their male child - the future Sun God, will be born anew. The term Ostara comes from the Anglo-Saxon "eastre", signifying the season of spring and beginnings. Some claim the name to be that of a Teutonic Goddess whose name is a variant of Ishtar or Astarte. Associated with this Sabbat are fertility symbols like eggs and rabbits - the World-Egg whence hatches all life, and the Hare who is a lunar animal sacred to several Goddesses

Concepts: fertility, both human and vegetable; new life stirring - fresh greenery, last snows have gone, flowers are again present, seeds have sprouted; first planting takes place; action, new beginnings: a great time to set plans into motion to come into fruition at harvest-time.

Also, in the spirit of planning and making way for the new, don’t forget Melange Magique’s Sunday Sabbat sale! On March 16th enjoy 10% everything in store, all day!

Looking for a public ritual? CUPS (Concordia University Pagan Society) is hosting an Ostara ritual at The Magical Blend on March 21st. The Rite will begin at 6:30 pm, and will end around 10:00 pm. Hope to see you all there!

Robyn and Scarlet are at the Toronto Pagan Conference this weekend!

If you are in the Toronto area this weekend, come and check out the talks being given by Melange's own staff!

Hand Maiden & Robin in Traditional Wicca (Scarlet)
Apprentice, assistant, student, maiden or youth: they served an important role in medieval times and throughout the evolution of Traditional Wicca. Usually only a female role but more and more we see a young man in the role, which is the Robin (or Fetch) of the Craft. We will explore history, mystery, knowledge and modern perspectives.
Saturday, March 1st, 1:15pm - Scandia room 2

On the path of the Healer: what it means to be responsible AND alternative (Robyn)
'Alternative healing' seems to be a catchall phrase for any type of treatment that is not considered to be a traditional part of Western Medicine. More and more we find advertisements for alternative healers who promise results, or methods that are less well known, and that are sometimes difficult to explain. How can one tell a healer from a fraud? What is it that makes one a healer, and how can one wishing to follow that path do so with honesty, grace and integrity? What is it like to be an "alternative" healer? Join us to discuss these topics, as well as to participate in an open question and answer period.
Sunday, March 2nd, 10am - Scandia room 1

For more information, check out http://www.torontopaganconference.com/

*** ALSO! If you can't make it this weekend, but would like an MP3 of the talks given at this conference, the link above should guide you toward how to get a hold of this upcoming CD! ***

Battling the Winter Blues

February is a peak time for people who suffer winter blues.
By this time of year, we are completely fed up with the cold and the dark and the damp of winter. It is time to do things to break the frustration. Here are some ideas!

Bring some light into your life!
Lighting your space up with extra light, opening the curtains or adding a couple extra candles to your altar will do just that. You can also start by changing the color of your clothing. Shift the shades to something lighter and brighter!

Cleanse out the negative!
Purge the clutter and banish he unused/unusables from your home and life. Start that spring cleaning EARLY! That way, by the time March comes, you will be ready for SPRING! Take a cleansing bath (we suggest our Men's or Women's Spiritual Cleansing bath salts). Do a sage smudging around your home and open all the windows for an hour. This will cleanse the negative as well as the old winter air from your home.

Bring in joy!
This time of year we see florists and garden centres bringing out their spring flowers. Daffodiles, crocuses, hyacinths are bright and playful flowers to bring into your home. They are just blooming. Hyacinth will also bring a light fresh and floral scent to make you smile! Buy and eat oranges or burn orange or citrus or sweet scented incense in your home. Listen to music that inspires you to write, draw, sing or dance. Get your body moving! Joining a gym to ready your self for summer fun is another great idea. Better yet, get your friends involved and go together! Do something completely random and fun!!

(one of our co-worked just bought gorgeous retro custome made roller skates!)

Mood Uplifters!
Rooibos teas
Mint and stevia flavoring
Vitamin B (complexes, especially B6 and B12)
Marshmallow root and ginko
Colours: yellow, orange, pink, peach, turquoise, sea-foam green, light blue
Laughing
Orris and orange and clove oil (navel chakra)

Transform your month. Today is a great day to do this.
Today is a Full Moon AND a Lunar Eclipse!

A spell to know the truth

A simple spell that is used to see the truth about a situation, or else to make others speak truly, is to use a lemon peel.

To begin, peel a lemon in a long single strip. Next, write your question, or the name of the person you wish to influence with this spell, on the inside of the peel (you may use any pen or ink to do so). You must now be patient and let the peel dry completely (sometimes this part can take around a week - but it's well worth the wait!). Once the peel has dried, burn the entire peel to activate the energies of the spell, and wait for the truth to be revealed!

Where Paganism & Christianity Collide Beautifully!

Saint Francis of Asssisi

His writings: Canticle of Brother Sun / The Praises of the Creatures
http://www.franciscan-archive.org/patriarcha/opera/canticle.html#CantSol

The Canticle of Brother Sun is the very first work of literature in the Italian language. St. Francis composed it most likely during the winter of 1224-5 A.D.—possibly while at the Church of San Damiano, in Assisi—as grace, born of suffering, urged him to praise and glorify the Most Holy Trinity even unto death. The Canticle of Brother Sun first appears in the historical record in a reference made by Bl. Thomas of Celano in his Vita Prima, written 1228 A.D.

Most High, Omnipotent, Good Lord,
Thine be the praises, the glory, and the honor and every blessing (cf. Apoc. 4:9.11).

To Thee alone, Most High, do they belong
and no man is worthy to mention Thee.

May Thou be praised, my Lord, with all Thy creatures (cf. Tob. 8:7),
especially mister brother sun,
of whom is the day, and Thou enlightens us through him.

And he is beautiful and radiant with a great splendor,
of Thee, Most High, does he convey the meaning

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for sister moon and the stars (cf. Ps. 148:3),
in heaven Thou has made them clear and precious and beautiful

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for brother wind,
and for the air and the cloudy and the clear weather and every weather (cf. Dan 3:64-65), through which to all Thy creatures Thou gives sustenance (cf. Ps. 103:13-14)

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for sister water,
who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste

May Thou be praised, my lord, for brother fire (cf. Dan 3:66),
through whom Thou illumines the night,
and he is handsome and jocund and robust and strong

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for our sister, mother earth, (cf. Dan 3:74)
who sustains us and governs,
and produces various fruits with colored flowers and green plants (cf. Ps 103:13-14)

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for those who forgive for the sake of Thy love 5 (cf. Mt 6:12),
and endure infirmity and tribulation

Blessed those who endure them in peace (cf. Mt 5:10),
because by Thee, Most High, will they be crowned

May Thou be praised, my Lord, for our sister, bodily death,
whom no man living can escape

Woe to those, who die in mortal sin:
blessed those whom she will find in Thy most holy desires,
because the second death will do them no evil (cf. Apoc 2:11; 20:6)

Praise and bless my Lord (cf. Dan 3:85),
and give Him thanks and serve Him with great humility!

Rootwork is spellbook that looks at component and magical work based on Black American folk beliefs. Rootwork is a form of American Hoodoo. It is not a religion but a tool for creating change in the real world. The first part of this book is an introduction to rootwork. The second part of the book is a compliation of spells that are easy to use.

Nine Worlds of Seid-Magic by Jenny Blain
$49.95 ISBN: 0415256518
Jenny Blain is among the few Pagan academic writers of out times. This book is a thorough look at Northern European Shamanism and magical practice. J Blain enlightens us aboutthe Seidr rites and rituals, the cosmology of the Northern Europeans, Seeresses and shamanistic practices, as well as cultural activites and ancester worship. This is a Routeledge Publication and highly recommended for anyone wanting to delve deeply into authentic culture and worship. A must have for any serious practitioner of Norse traditions.

The Wiccan Mystic by Ben Gruagach
$29.95 ISBN: 978-0615143118
What is a Mystery Religion? Is Wicca a Mystery Religion? B Gruagach explores these issues in this byeond Wicca 101 book. He explores the path of the mystic and the mysteries of initiation, Ethics and philosophy, theory and practice, ritual, and living a mystical life as a Wiccan. This is NOT a beginners book. For our growing religion, it is refreshing to see mre intermediate and advanced looks into the path we practice.

A Handbook for Wiccan Clergy by Kevin M Gardner
$33.95 ISBN: 978-1434339232
As Wicca grows, like any religion, it develops a clergy that serves the people. Yet, there has not been very much written for those on a clergy path. This book is divided five parts. The first part is a collection of ritual for rites of passage. Personally, I find that there are better books for this, but this is still a decent base outline of generic rituals. The second part explores myths and fables from a few different cultural backgrounds, including some meditations and rituals to connect with the themes in these stories. The third part examines methods of meditation. Both of these are very shallow looks, but good introductions. It is at part four where the book really gets interesting with "things to ponder". Here is challenges you to consider issues and beliefs and discuss and realize things for yourself. The last part addresses Pastoral Counselling. As a whole, I find it an excellent starting point for people wanting to consider the path of clergy. However, it is just that, a starting point.

A loved teapot is a stained teapot...

Story found at Tea Muse monthly e-newsletter about Yixing Artistry.
Article by Diane Rosen (December 2001)

STORY:
Perhaps the most famous Sung-era story, one shared by writer John Blofeld in "The Chinese Art of Tea," is about a nobleman who lived in the area of Hu-Chou. The man had amassed a collection of teapots known to be the most beautiful and ethereal. He acquired teapots everywhere and anywhere he traveled, using them lovingly to drink his daily tea. With the same ardor, he sought the finest tea farmers and purchased only the freshest most perfectly processed teas.

One day, a man who obviously looked like a beggar, wearing tattered clothing, and the disheveled look of someone unused to the finer things in life, called upon the nobleman at his home. After some hesitancy by the servant opening the door, the beggar was allowed to meet the nobleman and make his request in person.

In a surprisingly cultivated and mellifluous voice, the beggar said, "I have heard that the tea you drink is the finest in the land. Perhaps you will indulge me in sharing a cup of your superb tea."

The nobleman was astonished at the request, believing that the looks of the beggar covered a man naïve to the delicacies of fine tea. Nonetheless, he ordered tea to be prepared in one of his finest pots, and the beggar inhaled the aroma, took several thoughtful sips, then leaned back in the chair with a look of disappointment upon his face.

"Ah," he said, "the aroma is too faint, the flavor too mild. It is quite possible, sir, that your teapot, as beautiful as it is, simply is too new to brew the tea to its perfection. A teapot of several decades of use is required here."

Unwilling to believe that this beggar was the connoisseur he professed to be, the nobleman challenged him.

"Yes," the reply came, "it is easy to believe I am a beggar, but actually I am a formerly rich man in beggars clothing. My passion for tea overcame everything in my life. Eventually I sold my possessions, all but my most beloved teapot," he said, pulling out a small Yixing teapot from the folds of his ragged clothing. "Would you like to sample your tea in my precious pot? Its rich clay has absorbed the pleasures of the leaf for decades now."

And, so the nobleman scooped some of his cherished tea leaves into the old beloved pot, brewed it with hot water, timed its brew, and the two gentlemen sipped from its nectar. "Yes," the nobleman said after a long silence, "I understand now. I must have this pot for my collection! I will offer you fifty pieces of gold for it."

"Sorry," was the reply, "I would not be able to part with this pot for ten thousand pieces of gold."

The two men continued to sip their tea in silence, until the beggar broke the calm with his proposal. "I see that you understand the pleasures of tea and the importance of a well-loved pot. I am willing to share this pot with you for but five hundred pieces of silver. Should you agree, I will even leave this pot here, on one condition, and once a day I may come by to enjoy its beauty and the delectable tea with you."

And so it came to be that the two men, day after day, met to drink tea together, each enjoying the finely weathered pot that provided the fullest flavor to the finest tea.

The next time you reach for your most beloved pot, stained and worn from years of loving use, remember that it is just now coming into its prime!

Crown Chakra

There is a great series of workshops in progress for the chakras. Every 2 weeks, will be an information session on a chakra. Those who are following the entire series will spend the days in between working on that chakra. The series will begin again January 21st (7-9pm).

Here is some information about the Crown Chakra.

CROWN CHAKRA
The crown chakra is located at the top of the head, some say just slightily above this point. Other organs associated with this chakra are the pituitary gland, skull, and the cerebral cortex (your brain).

This is the chakra of SPACE and THOUGHT. Its colors are violent and white. The gemstones for this chakra are diamonds, clear quartz, herkamir diamonds, amethyst. The herbs and oils for this chakra are sandalwood, frankincense, lotus, and wormwood.

This is also a chakra of fasting.

This chakra is associated with spirituality, your higher self, insight, thought, enlightenment, divinity, and soul. You know you have problems or blocks with your crown chakra if you suffer confusion, depression, or a sense of alienation. WORLDLY ATTACHMENTS block this chakra. Let go of the things you cling to in this world, whether they are physical, mental, or emotional.

Some things you can do to meditate and connect with this chakra are various meditation techniques, especially in the full lotus or half-lotus positions. Follow your thoughts through your meditations without holding onto any passing thought.

This chakra is also about the RIGHT TO KNOW. This leads to an interesting discussion on Faith, Belief and knowledge. Faith is where you agree on something that cannot be proven. Belief is agreeing on something that someone has expereinced and can prove, but that you have not done for yourself. Knowledge is personal first-hand experience which also leads to understanding.

"Sacred Truth: Live in the Present Moment - Achieve a personal relationship with the Divine. Let go of the past, do not anticipate the future and live in the presence of the Divine." (quoted from http://www.pamperingu.com/Chakra%20Balancing/CrownChakra.htm)

Third Eye Chakra

There is a great series of workshops in progress for the chakras. Every 2 weeks, will be an information session on a chakra. Those who are following the entire series will spend the days in between working on that chakra. The series will begin again in January. Here is some information about the Third Eye Chakra.

THIRD EYE CHAKRA
The third eye chakra is located in the brow, between the eyebrows, or just a little above that center point. Other organs associated with this chakra are the eye, base of brain, and face.

This is the chakra of LIGHT and ILLUMINATION. Its colors are shades of indigo (a bluish-purple). The gemstones for this chakra are iolite, azurite, fluorite, lapidolite, and sugulite. The herbs and oils for this chakra are benzoin, geranium, rosemary, mugwort, mint, and mimosa.

This is a chakra of fasting. You can take in fruits like plums that are of the indigo color. Another thing you can ingest, though I do not necessarily recommend it is entheogens.

This chakra is associated with inspiration, meditation, spirituality awareness, perception, psychic abilities, ESP, insight, and intuition. You know you have problems or blocks with your third eye chakra if you have eye troubles, vision problems or headaches and migraines. This chakra is also associated with vision. ILLUSIONS block this chakra, especially the illusion of separation. Look past the illusions around you and understand that everything is connected. Separation is just an illusion.

Some things you can do to meditate and connect with this chakra are eye exercises. Explore methods of divination. Listen to the little voice inside you. TRUST YOURSELF!

This chakra is also about the RIGHT TO SEE. Look beyond the veils and illusions to see the truth and see how everything is connected.

"Not only do we construct our perceptions of the world, but we also go out and construct those perceptions IN the world. We make tables and bicycles and musical instruments becasue we can think of them." (quoted from p. 296 of "Wheels of Life" by Anodea Judith, PhD)

Throat Chakra

There is a great series of workshops in progress for the chakras. Every 2 weeks, will be an information session on a chakra. Those who are following the entire series will spend the days in between working on that chakra. The series will begin again in January. Here is some information about the Throat Chakras.

THROAT CHAKRA
The throat chakra is located in the throat. Other organs associated with this chakra are the ears, nose, mouth, neck, and shoulders.

This is the chakra of SOUND and TRUTH. Its colors are shades of blue. The gemstones for this chakra are blue lace agate, lapis lazuli, sodalite, saphire, blue topaz, aquamarine. The herbs and oils for this chakra are lavendar, mint, and eucalyptus.

If you wish to ingest substances to help connect with this chakra, eat foods that contain honey and citrus to help heal and strengthen the throat. For those who like teas, we recommend mint tea that is lightly sweetened.

This chakra is associated with receptive communication, expression, creativity, responsibility, truth, sound, listening actively, being true to your word and your own true nature. You know you have problems or blocks with your throat chakra if you have ear, nose and throat problems, if you have shoulder and neck pains, if you have a hard time saying what you want or need to say. This chakra is also associated with vibration. LIES block this chakra, especially the lies we tell ourselves. Think about the things you have lost, people who have gone from your life. Accept the truth around you and within you, speak only the truth, accept your own true nature... accept WHO YOU ARE.

Some things you can do to meditate and connect with this chakra are to explore vibrating sounds through your throat till your whole body can feel the vibrations. Listen to tuning forks or classical music. Practice active listening (another link for active listening). Take a one day vow of silence. Keep a daily diary. Try kareoke or other fun games like charades. Get a massage, especially for the neck and shoulders.

This chakra is also about the RIGHT TO SPEAK AND BE HEARD. Say what you mean and mean what you say. You have the right to speak up for yourself and to be heard. This is a chakra where you are working on your communication skills.

Explore your creativity! Write a story, poetry, and song lyrics. Take singing or music lessons. Sing in the shower or in the car! SMILE... ALOT! Did you know that smiling releases endorfens that help improve your mood?

Heart Chakra

There is a great series of workshops in progress for the chakras. Every 2 weeks, will be an information session on a chakra. Those who are following the entire series will spend the days in between working on that chakra. The series will begin again in January. Here is some information about the HeartChakra:

HEART CHAKRA
The heart chakra is located in chest over the sternum. It focuses on the heart. Other organs associated with this chakra are the lungs, arms and hands, chest and back muscles.

This is the chakra of AIR and LOVE. Its colors are shades of green and pink. The gemstones for this chakra are emerald, aventirine, malachite, jade, green/pink tourmaline, rose quartz, rhodanite, and rhodachrosite. The herbs and oils for this chakra are rose, jasmine, heather, mallow, hibiscuss, mint, and copal.

If you wish to ingest substances to help connect with this chakra, eat foods that are light like green salads. For those who like teas, we recommend white or green teas.

This chakra is associated with receptive energy, love, devotion, compassion, comfort, harmony, and healing. You know you have problems or blocks with your heart chakra if you have breathing difficulties or anxiety, heart troubles, or muscle and back tension. This chakra is also associated with emotion. GRIEF and LOSS block this chakra. Think about the things you have lost, people who have gone from your life. Let that sadness fill you and then BREATHE. Let the pain go with each breathe. Remember those that are currently around you who love you. Cherish that love that is already there. Breathe in the love around you. Let it fill you and bring you calm and comfort.

Some things you can do to meditate and connect with this chakra are to do breathing exercises. Get a good massage from a spa or from someone you love. Hug your friends and family.

This chakra is also about the RIGHT TO LOVE AND BE LOVED. You have the right to do feel love and to feel loved. This is a chakra where you are working on your emotional balance and relationships. A good book to read is Sam Keen's "To Love and Be Loved" (ISBN: 0553375288 cost $20.00).

As an exercise, try keeping a journal of gratitude. What are you thankful for? Who do you appreciate and why? Write specizal notes expressing your appreciateion to people around you, especially those you don't say it much to. Try to a couple of your co-workers, your neighbors, the person who delivers your mail.
