Mabon recipes

The second harvest is upon us! If you don't have anything ready yet to reign in the autumn equinox, don't worry about it. The recipes are much like the ones for Lughnasadh as they are both harvest occasions. No need for anything fancy, relax!

Pumpkin Bread with Cranberries
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tbsp pumpkin spice
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 3/4 cup pumpkin purée (15oz can)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup fresh or dried cranberries

Combine flour, spice, baking powder, and salt in bowl. Stir to blend the dry ingredients well. Combine eggs, sugar, pumpkin, and oil in a mixing bowl, beating until smooth. Stir in flour mixture, then stir in cranberries. Spoon into a greased and floured loaf pan. Bake at 325° for 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes or until done.

Classic Stew
*If through belief or diet issues you cannot/will not eat meat, simply replace the beef with mock-chicken or tofu.

1 1/2 lbs beef, chunks
1 large onion, chunks or diced
6 to 8 carrots, cut
8 to 10 medium potatoes, cut
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Brown beef on medium heat, cover with 8 cups cold water. Bring water to boil. Add onion, carrots, potatoes, salt and pepper. Cover and reduce heat to low. Cook for 2 to 3 hours til done.

For dessert..
Caramel apples, squash pies, nut mix.. these are just a few of the many harvest snacks.

We have a new powder in store!

Diatomaceous Earth Powder is a powder first discovered in the Haußelberg Hills in Germany and initially used as a fertilizer and in pancake batter, simply because of it's resemblance to limestone and cornmeal. It's properties are now known and can be used for several different purposes.

Used in anything from toothpaste to metal polisher, face scrubs to insecticide, and cat litter to insulation. It has now worked it's way to Le Melange Magique where we use it for purification and the removal of negativity and the evil eye.

Sprinkle it around the outside of your property, in the corners of your home, around windowsills and on door frames, or even on your doorstep to help keep your home clear of negativity.

Throughout the month of September there are planets visible in the gorgeous nights sky. For all of you planet gazers, here's what to expect..

Mercury came into the sky yesterday though will only be visible around the 10th, due to the sun, and only right before sunrise.
This would be a good time to work on anything involving communication, travel, and intellect. Using a fire agate stone or a tiger's eye, as they are Mercury ruled stones, will help with introspection.

Jupiter and Neptune will be visible starting from just before sunset, lasting throughout the month.
Jupiter brings with it the chance to work on personal growth, creativity, and emotional uplift. Using turquoise, topaz, or jasper will help bring out this self-expanding energy.

Neptune opens the door to inspiration, romance, mysticism, and deception. Amethyst, jade, fluorite, or aquamarine will help keep you on track between what is glamour and what is an illusion.

Out with the Old and In with the New!
We have been revamping many of our displays in preparation for new stock to arrive throughout August and September.

New in as well are some bright plants to enliven the store! Our Irish Shamrock plant still clings to life and peaks out over our computer. Our everlasting Christmas Cactus is in hibernation but we expect it to burst full of color in November. Today we just added a brand new Jasmine Flowering plant for added love and joy. More plants are to come to inspire various energies in our store.

Honoring Isaac Bonewits

Isaac Bonewits passed away Thursday August 12th, 2010.

In honor of our revered NeoPagan Elder Isaac Bonewits (http://www.adf.org/about/leaders/isaac-bonewits/), who passed away on Thorsday, Augustus 12th 2010, we are holding an ADF Druid style memorial rite on Wodensday Augustus 18th in Angrignon Park at 7pm (6:30pm arrival). The ritual will be led by Linda Demissy, former Senior Druid of Silver Fox Grove, ADF.

Everyone is invited to join and make a short bardic offering, sacrifice of a crafted item or food, or retell their encounter with Isaac (even if it's just by reading one of his books).

ADF rites are basically a "party" where Gods, Ancestors and Nature Spirits are invited and made offering to, through the gates of the triple centre, Fire of the Gods, Well of the Ancestors, and Tree of Life. An omen is then cast to determine how the offerings were received, and if well received, the ritual drink is blessed and shared.

In this case, we will ask for the blessings to go to Isaac. Bridget will be called at the start of the ritual for bardic inspiration, the Dagda at the centre of the rite, and the Morrigan to help carry him with blessings to the Otherworld. These three deities were those he loved best.

We will be passing the hat to help his family pay for his large medical bills, and you may want to bring some coins to drop into the cauldron during the Ancestors offerings. Bring instruments, drums, your voices and food to share.

Lammas (AKA Lughnassadh)

In the Wheel of the Year, Lughnassadh is the first of three harvest festivals, and although the days are still hot and sunny, they are growing ever shorter, marking the rapidly approaching winter season (which for the ancient Celts began at Samhain, our modern Hallowe'en). Like Imbolc, its partner across the Wheel, Lughnassadh is a cross-quarter day, and as other cross-quarter holidays is celebrated from sunset the night before, as the Celts believed the days began with the vanishing of the sun as opposed to its rise.

The alternate name for this Sabbat is "Lammas", which is derived from the Christian festival of "Loaf-Mass". In essence, this festival was a day of first fruit offerings, marking the beginnings of the harvest with bread baked from the first grains. "Lughnassadh" translates to "the feast of Lugh", the Celtic sun-god of many skills. Traditionally, this is the time of year for fairs and festivals. Many Highland Games and Clan Gatherings occur around this time of year, family reunions and games of skill to honour Lugh and the mythical funeral games he held to honour his foster mother Taillte.

Lughnasadh recipes

Whether for the simple feast or a larger celebration, here are some delicious recipes for bringing in the harvest season. These are basic recipes though if you'd like to expand, any food based on berries or corn or other freshly harvested foods will be perfect for the occasion.

Corn Bread
1 cup flour
1 cup yellow cornmeal
2/3 cup white sugar
1 tsp sugar
3 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 egg
1 cup milk
1/3 cup vegetable oil

*Be sure to beat eggs and milk well before adding to mix.
Bake in oven, preheated to 400F (200C), for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Stuffed Bell Peppers
Precook beef, spiced as you like it, and mix with bits of dried basil, dried oregano, and rice/couscous (of your choice) averaging 1/3 the amount of the beef.
Cut off the top of a bell pepper and empty it out. Sprinkle cheese on the bottom (of your choice, though cheddar is not recommended), fill in with the beef mix, and top with a layer of cheese.
Bake at 350F for fifty to sixty minutes or until cheese has browned.
*Can also be done with large mushrooms instead of bell pepper.

Blackberry Pie
Crust: 2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp granulated white sugar
1 cup butter, chilled, and cut into 1 inch chunks
1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water

Filling: 5 cups fresh blackberries
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
3 tbsp cornstarch
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp butter, cut into small chunks

*Can be glazed with white powdered icing sugar.

Mix flour, salt, and sugar together. Add butter. Mix in water slowly til the dough holds together. Divide dough in half and refrigerate for an hour before using.
Roll out dough, place half as the bottom in the pie pan (9" pan), and place back in the fridge (covered in plastic wrap) as you make the filling.
After filling is made (and do not mix in the butter yet!) place in the pie pan. Now you can use the butter, dotting it generously over the top of the filling.
Roll out the second half of the dough and cover the top of the pie (either using the dough as strips or as a whole).
Bake at 425F (200C) for 25-30 minutes. If the edges of the pie brown too much simply cover them with tinfoil. Bake until golden brown or the filling begins to bubble.
Let cool on a wrack for several hours before serving or before placing in the fridge.

Cooling Magic in a Heat Wave

Having a hard time in the heat wave? Melting like the watches in Dali's art? Wondering how you will survive?

Please be aware of the dangers of heat for sun and heat stroke.

Stay out of the sun. Drink lots of water. Spent time in cooler places with air conditioning. Avoid extremes (some places crank their air conditioning too much). Extremes will make you ill or give you summer colds.

So how do you survive?

Here are some cooling ideas from the apothecary of our shop.

Cooling Lavender Bath
Fill a bath with water that is room temperature or cooler (never cold as you do not want to shock your body). Add a couple tablespoons of lavender bath salts (you can have them specially blended for you at our apothecary). Soak and relax within this soothing cooling bath,

Peppermint Spray
In any spray bottle filled with water, add a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Shake and spritz yourself as needed. Peppermint essential oil has the medicinal and magical properties cooling and waking the body, as well as relieving headaches. You can also make a basin of this peppermint water and soak a scarf in it to wrap around your neck or head to help you stay cool.

Iced Tea Refreshers
Any tea can be made into a refreshing iced tea. In a large container, fill half way with crushed ice or ice cubes. Make a pot of your favorite tea, sweetened to taste. Pour the entire pot into the ice filled container. Stir and ENJOY! We recommend the following teas:

• On the Waterfront (herbal mint and fruit tea)
  
• Floral Rooibos (rooibos tea with added lavender and jasmine flowers)
• Candied Ginger Peach Rooibos

Hot Summer Fun

Among the many summer fun things to do and learn, take a look at the magical experience of Fire Poi! It originates in New Zealand with the Maori people as a form of cultural dance. Other cultures around the world (like Hawaii) have incorporated versions of this and included fire dancing with a variety of items like the poi. Take a look at the video below!

Licorice Root Toothbrush

Did you know that you could make your own toothbrushes from Licorice roots? here is how courtesy of http://www.henriettesherbal.com/blog/licorice-toothbrush.html

licorice sticks (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

• Boil a handful licorice sticks (medium thickness - 5 mm is about right, 3 mm too thin, 7 mm too thick) with 3-4 cinnamon sticks and about 10 cloves. If you like you can add ginger, as well.
• Let simmer until the sticks are soft. This takes about 4-5 hours.
• Strain out the licorice sticks and put them into a longish container.
• Cover with vodka, close lid on that longish container.
• Let sit overnight.
• Put sticks into dehydrator, let dry on full heat (about 60 deg. C) until dry.

Using these toothbrushes: chew open 1-2 cm of one end, use that to brush with. You can't reach around corners. When the chewed-up bit is all untidy, remove the untidiness with scissors or a knife and chew up the next bit.

And yes, tastes like spicy licorice with no vodka taste.

Midsummer Recipes!

For anyone searching good recipes for that extra -yet simple- kick for a midsummer night snack or friendly gathering or barbecue, here are a few of my personal favourites.

GREEN TEA & STRAWBERRY
Simple and delicious! Steep your green tea and let it cool for a while. Blend 1/2 cup crushed ice with a 1/2 cup strawberries until it's smooth. Add your (now cooled down) green tea at the last moment and voila!

SUNDRIED TOMATO SALAD WITH VINAIGRETTE
1/2 cup dried (canned/drained) tomatoes
3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
12 fresh basil leaves/lettuce leaves
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

Blend and toss and serve!

MANGO CHICKEN
1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 small onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced
1 tbsp chili powder 1/2 mango, peeled and chopped 1/4 cup mango chutney
1 tsp grated lime rind 3 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp granulated sugar
1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper 4 chicken breasts, skinned

In a saucepan, heat oil on medium heat, stirring in onion garlic and chili for about five minutes or until soft. Stir in the mango and mango chutney, lime rinds and juice, sugar, salt and pepper, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer to about eight minutes or until the mangoes are tender. Let cool.
Purée the mango blend until smooth and coat the chicken breasts with it. Cover and refrigerate for three to four hours.
Grill on medium heat and brush with any of the left over purée. Cook for forty-five minutes or until fully cooked.

LAVENDER COOKIES
5/8 cup butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 tbsp lavender flowers
1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 350F (175C). Cream together butter and sugar. Beat egg and blend in. Stir in flour and lavender flowers. Place on greased cookie sheet and bake for fifteen to twenty minutes or til golden brown.


This exact list of recipes is what I'll be making for my family this year to celebrate summer! All very earth based, sun related, and summer-to-taste recipes.

Keepin' it Cool for the Summer

Its a little hard not to notice that summer has arrived early this year, isn't it? What a heat wave! In an effort to keep cool, here's a list of things that we've found helpful that we thought we'd share in the spirit of enjoying the weather without stressing out:

First things first, iced tea! We have a wide selection of teas and tisanes that make delicious iced teas for your drinking pleasure.

• Here's a tip to making perfect iced tea: boil your water as per usual and double the amount of tea you'd normally put in your strainer (so about 4 table spoons will do!). Fill a large pitcher halfway with ice. Once your tea has steeped for about 5 minutes in the hot water, pour it over the ice and stir. It will cool down pretty quickly so you can drink it right away.
• Did you know that most of our teas are fair trade and organic? Its true!
• We have many pretty tea sets and glass tea pots in store, too!
  

Next on the list are sarongs! We have a fun and colorful variety in, just in time to dress more loosely to enjoy summer breezes.

A personal favorite of my cool-down tricks are Goddess Milk Bath. Creamy and good for burnt of baked skin, its a great way to relax after a long day out in the sun.

Speaking of being out in the sun, consider a wind chime for your garden or yard! It brings a little touch of magic to the wind, don't you think?

And last but not least, now that school season is just about out, its time to consider your summer reading list! What have you been meaning to catch up on that you've had to set aside during your other studies? Druidry? Wicca? Qabala? In this discussion, we will look at the pros and cons of coven and solitary practice and field questions anyone has on these issues. We will also consider how to evaluate if a group is for you and safety concerns that you should always keep in mind.

Cleansing and Clearing (Catharine)
So many times in consultations and workshops people come and ask how they can cleanse a space or themselves spiritually of negativity they feel in their environments or around them. There are many ways to do this! This workshop will explore the simpler methods for clearing your aura, and for clearing your home. We will discuss your stories and needs, perform a group exercise to cleanse, and offer ways to help your situation. Please let me know in advance if you have any allergies to incense or herbs.
