In reality, paganism is probably best considered to be an umbrella term for a variety of spiritual and religious traditions. In this brief introduction, we will discuss what we mean when we use the word Pagan in a religious or spiritual context, discover some of the more popular Pagan paths being followed today (such as Wicca, witchcraft, Druidism, Heathenism, or simply Pagan), and explore some of their commonalities and differences.

Introduction to the Elements (Amanda)
Many contemporary Pagan and esoteric traditions use the five foundational elements of earth, air, fire, water and ether/spirit. What are they, where do they come from, what do they represent, how can we tune-in to their energies for our magical or spiritual work, and why would we want to? This 2-hour introduction scratches the surface of these questions and offers some practical exercises to explore the five elements.

Yule Fair Success!

This Yule Fair for 2010 was a spectacular success!

We have SEVEN authors present: Judika Illes, Ellen Dugan, Christopher Penczak, Adelina St-Clair, Arin Murphy-Hiscock, Brendan Myers and Rob St-Martin. All had a wonderful time and wished to tell the volunteers (from CMS, MPRC, CUPS, and Avalon), the store staff, and the whole community what a great experience it was to be here and part of our incredible community exchange with free workshops and a vending room full of local artisans.

The staff of The Magical Blend wish to congratulate all the volunteers for their amazing efforts in helping us pull this off so smoothly. They conducted themselves with great professionalism and superior smiles!

Other successes you might not have seen were the Dinner with the Authors, Pagan Sunday Brunch, Gaia Gathering Auction Fundraiser and the MPRC Yule Ritual.

Burgers & Benedicts hosted out authors dinner on the Saturday night giving many folks an opportunity to eat and mingle with the authors in a social setting.

Burgers & Benedicts again hosted the monthly Pagan Sunday Brunch which is always a great event. Meet folks there the last Sunday of every month around 10am.

Gaia Gathering (www.gaiagathering.ca) is the Canadian National Pagan Conference, this year to be held in Montreal May (Victoria Day weekend) 2011. Previous fundraisers have helped cover the initial payments for the reservation of space at Concordia University, keeping this conference in the heart of all the action! The Auction fundraiser was focused on defraying some of the costs for volunteers. It's success shone incredibly with a total of over $1300!!

The Yule Ritual on the Sunday night was hosted by the MPRC and featured Pagan style Yule Caroling. We had great fun singing traditional Christmas carols that had been changed to reflect Paganism.

Vendors had a fantastic time and showed off their wares and networked for future events.

All in all a great success! Many bright blessings to all over the holidays this Yuletide season!

New pendulums!

Fresh from the crate, new pendulums have arrived!

Among many of our old favourites such as the chakra, the metal, and the sephoroton shaped pendulums we now have....

Wooden Egyptian Pendulums!
They can easily pick up on the vibrations of any space and are great for feng shui practitioners. Often used to keep the mind focused on one goal. They tend to work best when energized in a pyramid.

Rememberance Day

November 11th
Remember those soldiers who have died for our freedom in World War I & II.
At 11:00am, offer your time and energy.
Light a candle and hold a silent vigil for 11 minutes.

More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served our country in this way, and more than 100,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
John McCrae

For more information about the history and activities about Rememberance Day, Please visit this site: http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=history/other/remember

What will I do?

Here at the store, I will use our public altar. At 11:00am, I will light a candle in honor of my grandfather (now gone) who was a veteran. I will read aloud his poem that he wrote while in the war trenches of WWII in Europe then observe 11 minutes of silence.

May my energy and prayers from this small vigil strengthen the lives of veterans still living, honor their sacrifices, respect those long gone, and help keep alive our current military abroad today.

Soldiers' Feet
This is my grandfather's poem.

Magical Success Story

August 29th, 2010.
Tsuki, a $2500 Silver Savannah Cat, went missing during a move.
The call for help went out to the community both local and to the magical community.

November 3rd, 2010.
Tsuki has been found and captured and is home safe and sound!

What did we do on the magical side to achieve this?

@ Scarlet's Home:
Upon my altar paten, I placed a photo my my beloved Tsuki.
At the top point of the altar paten's pentacle stood my Bast statue where I invoked the Egyptian cat goddess to watch over him and keep him safe. I brown candle with catnip and protection oil was burned monthly. His blanket was charged with attraction energy to draw him back to familiar grounds and placed in his cat carrier on the back balcony of a neighbors home where he had been spotted. Every night, I visualized him home in my arms and wrapped him in love and health.

@ Samara's Home:
Daily, she wrapped his photo in white light and prayed he remain not far from home and glow to all who see him so he may be found and brought home.

Other people have had white or brown candles lit upon their altars coaxing him to never forget his home and to find his way back before the snow.

Through so much prayer and magic, Tsuki is now back home and safe.

Magic was not the only effort, however. With all acts of magic, there must be a follow-through in the real world. When he was first lost, I contacted all vets, pet stores, shelters in the area to inform them of the loss, in case someone brought him there. I put up posters for on lamp posts and in bus shelters in a 4 block radius. I posted his information on several websites that help track missing pets. Many called with other advise. Setting out his food, blankets and toys in the yard. Sprinkling his soiled litter in places near the home so he finds his own familiar scent. Send fliers to all homes in that 4 block radius. As soon as he was spotted and I confirmed that it was indeed him, I made new fliers with updated information and again posted them in all the mail boxes to remind people. His cat carrier was placed on the back balcony of one home he was frequenting for food. Another home fed him at a regular time each day to coax him close. Consistency and regularity builds routine and confidence. He came to the family and was easily captured.

Magic and real world action created an amazing success story.
Nine weeks is a long time. Other success stories can and do happen. Never lose hope. And ... believe in your magic!

Thanks everyone and bright blessing to all!

Jack o'Lore

Almost everyone knows what a jack o'lantern is and almost everyone has made one.
Ever wonder why?

There are numerous lores about why it started, where, who, how.. One of the most told being of a man named Jack. Once Jack had passed, and upon finding that Heaven would not let him enter, he was given a flaming piece of coal from the fires of hell by the Devil himself so that he may find his way back to Earth. Placing it inside of a turnip he happened to have handy he then began his eternal wander in search of home.

Another being on the other end of the fence, though still technically in the search of home.
Being that Samhain is the night of the year on which the veil between our world and the spirit world is barely drawn, a candle would be placed on the doorstep or front window to aid spirits of loved ones find their way home through the darkness. Placing it in a squash, turnip, or pumpkin was for protection and well-being of the home and all those within. Eventually a ghoulish face was carved on the front of the lantern to scare away evil and unwanted spirits.

Speaking of! There's still time to drop off your pumpkins for our in-store contest!

Melange Magique's Annual Yule Fair
Saturday - Sunday December 4th & 5th
Yule and Christmas can sometimes be a mixed bag of gifts. Snow is on the way, the pressures of holiday shopping can reach frenetic levels, and the promise of visiting relatives and far-flung friends can be a joyful thought, but maybe tinged with some dread. For us, the promises of Yule include all those things, but it also gives us a chance to reconnect with our traditional family of friends that we see during the Yule Fair. The Concordia University Pagan Society (CUPS) started the first Yule Fair and ran it successfully for five years. Since then, the MPRC and Melange Magique have taken up its tradition, providing a place where pagan friends can congregate in a familiar spot, socialize and share, and exchange warm wishes for the season. Call us corny if you must, but we find great comfort in that idea, which is why it’s such a pleasure to bring this event to you. We hope that you enjoy all the activities, lectures, vendors, and friends that you will meet and reconnect with during this Yule Fair.

Samhain recipes

Samhain, one of my personal favourite sabbats, holds some of the more unique flavours of the season. Mixtures of apples, nuts, spices, squash, pumpkin, and others when combined fill the air with an aroma that can't be described as anything other than autumn.
The feasts held for Samhain are in respective celebration in honouring the deceased and the anticipation for the cycle to start again.

As the main meal I have no set recipes, but I do recommend anything with squash, turnips, corn, and/or pork.

Lamb's Wool

2 pints ale
8 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ginger
Pinch cinnamon
Pinch clove
6 cooking apples

Pour ale into saucepan and heat gently until it bubbles. Stir in sugar and spices, and cook on low for 30 minutes.
Cut apples into slices without stems and seeds. Place in heatproof dish with a bit of water and bake uncovered on low until soft. Removes apples and place in punch bowl.
Remove spiced ale from heat. Pour mixture over warm apples. Serve warm.

Colcannon

10 large potatoes
1 head cabbage
1 onion (or scallions or chives)

Helmut & Co. workshop

As with herbs and stones, metal has it's place in magic. Whether it's for health, prosperity, love, protection, divination, or just a simple ritual, metals can play a large role.

Forty years ago Helmut began trade as a blacksmith. Thirty years ago Helmut started crafting for the pagan community. Come join us in celebrating 30 years of Helmut & Co. production of fine ritual tools!
To mark the occasion we are playing host to Helmut & Co. Metal and Magic Workshop on Saturday, October 30th 2:00-4:00pm ($40)

Thirty years of making ritual tools, research, and experimentation have taught me that when it comes to metal, magic follows a predictable pattern of behaviour linked to it's state. In this workshop, I will describe these properties and how they affect the ritual and magical use of metal for today's practitioners.

Hope to see you there!

Did you know? What can you do?

Did you know that there are many other holidays in October than just Canadian Thanks Giving and Halloween/Samhain? Here are some from history and today:

Sukkot ("Tabernacles") - A harvest festival that also commemorates the forty years the children of Israel spent in the Sinai desert on the way from Egypt to Israel. Temporary huts (singular "suka," plural "Sukkoth") are built and used during this festival for meals and other family activities. The open roof is covered with branches and decorated with fruits. Religious Jews must have a lulav and an etrog to bless for Sukkot. The etrog is a citron. The lulav is a sort of wand made up of a palm branch, myrtle and willow (arava), which together make up the "four species" of plants that must be represented.

Sukkoth, Passover and Shavuoth ("Weeks') were the three most important holidays in ancient Israel, since a pilgrimage to Jerusalem was mandatory on these holidays. The last day of Sukkoth is Hoshanah Rabba. It is a Sabbath day on which no work is done, in honor of the willow, the hoshana. According to some traditions, the book of life is sealed on Hoshanah Rabba. The day after Sukkot (two days abroad) is Shmini Atsereth, which coincides with Simchat Torah, described below. [September/October]

Simkhat Torah. - The rejoicing of the Torah immediately follows Sukkot and celebrates the end of the annual cycle reading the Torah and its immediate re-commencement. All the scrolls of Torah, followed by the children singing and dancing, are paraded seven times around the synagogues. [October]

Ludi Augustales – October 3-12 Following his predecessors Sulla and Caesar, games were held in Augustus' honor starting in 11 BC. It became a ten-day event under Tiberius. Usually only the last day featured chariot racing.

Meditrinalia – October 11 To Jupiter, in his form as the wine-god, and Meditrina, goddess of healing and medicine.

Eid El Fitr which comes after Ramadan.. People eat special cookies. This holiday is for the Muslim Egyptians. It is a three days holiday, on the first day at dawn all men, (and women if they want to), go to the mosque to pray. and usually you are invited to lunch at uncles, aunts, or friends. (approximately October 13th)

Canadian Thanks Giving (October 11th, 2010)
The origins of Canadian Thanksgiving are more closely connected to the traditions of Europe than of the United States. Long before Europeans settled in North America, festivals of thanks and celebrations of harvest took place in Europe in the month of October. The very first Thanksgiving celebration in North America took place in Canada when Martin Frobisher, an explorer from England, arrived in Newfoundland in 1578. He wanted to give thanks for his safe arrival to the New World. That means the first Thanksgiving in Canada was celebrated 43 years before the pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts!

What can you do?
Harvest from local farmers. Share a feast with family.
Look for colored leaves to decorate your home with.
Engage in an exercise of gratitude. What is that? Each day in October from the 1st to the 11th (Thanks Giving), write down something you are grateful or thankful for in your life. Share this list at your Thanks Giving feast.

Mabon recipes

The second harvest is upon us! If you don't have anything ready yet to reign in the autumn equinox, don't worry about it. The recipes are much like the ones for Lughnasadh as they are both harvest occasions. No need for anything fancy, relax!

Pumpkin Bread with Cranberries
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tbsp pumpkin spice
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 3/4 cup pumpkin purée (15oz can)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup fresh or dried cranberries

Combine flour, spice, baking powder, and salt in bowl. Stir to blend the dry ingredients well. Combine eggs, sugar, pumpkin, and oil in a mixing bowl, beating until smooth. Stir in flour mixture, then stir in cranberries. Spoon into a greased and floured loaf pan. Bake at 325° for 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes or until done.

Classic Stew
*If through belief or diet issues you cannot/will not eat meat, simply replace the beef with mock-chicken or tofu.

1 1/2 lbs beef, chunks
1 large onion, chunks or diced
6 to 8 carrots, cut
8 to 10 medium potatoes, cut
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Brown beef on medium heat, cover with 8 cups cold water. Bring water to boil. Add onion, carrots, potatoes, salt and pepper. Cover and reduce heat to low. Cook for 2 to 3 hours til done.

For dessert..
Caramel apples, squash pies, nut mix.. these are just a few of the many harvest snacks.

Enjoy and have a merry Mabon!

Thank you to everyone for helping us celebrate our 19th year!

She is now very comfortable in our store after the great greeting you all gave her. And thank you all for the great name suggestions! We're trying to pick one so the name should be out shortly.

New powder!

We have a new powder in store!

Diatomaceous Earth Powder is a powder first discovered in the Haußelberg Hills in Germany and initially used as a fertilizer and in pancake batter, simply because of it's resemblance to limestone and cornmeal. It's properties are now known and can be used for several different purposes.

Used in anything from toothpaste to metal polisher, face scrubs to insecticide, and cat litter to insulation. It has now worked it's way to Le Melange Magique where we use it for purification and the removal of negativity and the evil eye.

Sprinkle it around the outside of your property, in the corners of your home, around windowsills and on door frames, or even on your doorstep to help keep your home clear of negativity.

Warning; as it is used in the products listed above be careful not to inhale or ingest and not to let it get into any cuts or scrapes you may have.
