Job Opportunity

It is back to school time even with the staff at the store. This means that many of our full time staff have to change their schedules to attend school, thus becoming part-time employees. It is a challenging thing to work and do school simultaneously. We at Melange Magique do our best to help support our employees in their studdies by accommodating these seasonal changes.

This however means that we have some open shifts in the store for a new employee. If you feel qualified, are bilingual, and are available on the days and times we need, then please bring in your CV as soon as possible. We intend to hire someone by September 1st for the following hours:

Tuesdays 1-5pm
Thursdays 3-9pm
Saturdays 10am - 6pm

Address your CV's to the attention of Scarlet, Debra, or Robyn.

Helmut's Forge in Melange Magique

While at KG, we made a wonderful old connection that we used to have when the store was in its infancy. We met with Helmut's Forge! This is a private forge in Ontario where the metalsmith specialized in unique Pagan blades (athames & bollines).

We brought back to our store a beautiful selection of small billines (curved herb sicles) of exotic woods or of amber with copper and silver blades. Each piece is a work of art! They are carefully crafted and cleansed by a man who really knows the magic of each element involved in the creation of each piece.

HUZZAH!
He will even be coming to our shop!
Helmut will visit us late November or early December with more of his incredible wares. He will also be hosting a workshop on the Magic of Metals and Metalsmithing. Keep watching here for more information.

Kaliedascope Gathering 2008 News

We are back from the festical. It was an incredible expereince as always. This year we had a DOUBLE tent booth in the main vending area and met so many wonderful people. We would like to personally thank the various folks who volunteered to reserve our space as of the Saturday (Hobbes and friends), and the folks who helped us manage the our vending booth (John D., Karyn, WinterWolf).

Here is a brief recap of the exciting things we experienced there!

Monday July 28
Sam and I arrived and struggled to set up in the rain that decided to rain on us ONLY during tent set-up. We greeted the fairies and relaxed for the day.

Tuesday July 29
I (Scarlet) lead a beautiful Baby Naming ceremony for Alexander Roger-Rene Dhur. It was a largely attended ceremony. As a member of Black Forest tradition with vows to serve the community, performing rites of passage and especially baby blessings are my favotire services. The bonus is that I am the Goddess Mother to this adorable little man. here are a few pictures:

This is the formal altar with some special items that will be given to Alexander at his rite of manhood later on in his life.

This is me and Alexander. I hope to one day have a child of my own.

Wednesday July 30
Debra showed up in TWO trips with new tenting that was amazing and SO MUCH STOCK! We had such a full and beautiful booth! This year's festival theme was fairies and we were PREPARED! People were already coming into check out the pretties in out vending tent before we were done setting up!

Thursday July 31
We were finally and fully set up. This was an amazing day to sit in the vending tents, meet folks and make sales. We even had MIDNIGHT MADNESS!! This is where all the festival venders stay open till midnight for everyone just coming onto the site. The earlybirds get the specials! Mead was shared as part of the brewing contest. Kids ran around with glowsticks. We all changed from the city life of jeans and work clothing into sarongs and other summer fun clothes. Belly dancing and drumming around the bonfire could be heard from where we stood in our vending tent.

Friday August 1

Friday we continued the great day here, however there was a fun Fairy Gathering Cocktail Party. We watched folks go by dressed in their ritual best or in fairy costumes for the costume ball. In the evening we rested and watched the incredible display of starscape and shooting stars. MAKE A WISH!

Saturday August 2
Robyn came out to visit, despite her healing broken leg. HUZZAH! The unfortunate thing was the terrible thunder storms that hit that day and nearly flooded out vending tents. We spent a good deal of the day frantically moving things to save them from the encrouching puddle that grew from a 1/2 inch deep 1 foot diameter puddle in front of the entrance to a 8 foot puddle of about 2 inched deep. YIKES! Thankfully the ground soaked it up by the evening. The weather shifted and the night was beautiful and dry. Perfect for a bardic competition around the bonfire. Our very own Hobbes from the MPRC was performing a touching story for his father who past waway not long ago.

Sunday August 3
This was our LAST DAY! We held a book sale in the end of the day to help reduce the things we would need to pack and bring home. It was a sad time to have to say goodbye to frinds we only see once a year at this festival. The atmosphere is a rare expereicne of friendship and support we no longer really see in the general public "real" world. We love and miss everyone we met there!

Scarlet with the red hair looks up and wishes everyone a great year!

Sam the elf wishes everyone a Fairy Fun summer and hopes to see you all next festival!

Why is the store supporting this?
There are few women's sports out there. Also, few are like this one where the woman are co-supportive and out of have fun as well as get in shape. Their competitive streak never causes strife but encourages them to be better at what they do. Again in this game a Pagan fromt he community plays on the team of La Racaille and the store's own Manager will be an official helping to keep the score.

Our visit from Brendan Myers

Yesterday Mélange was privileged to have a visit from Dr. Brendan Myers, who had come in from Hamilton to give us a lecture on the origins of the concept of Virtue, as well as a discussion of what it means in terms of modern pagan practices.

There was standing room only for the lecture, and a fairly decent line to have copies of his latest book, The Other Side of Virtue, signed and to talk to Dr. Myers one on one. People came out from as far as Ottawa for this opportunity, and none were disappointed. Afterwards, there was a dinner in the Old Port, too.

For anyone who missed this event, don't despair! We have more signed copies of his book in store, and a promise for another visit when his next book, A Pagan Testament comes out this November.

This event is one of a few author events that is co-sponsored by the MPRC. We are pleased to work with them to bring pagan authors and guest speakers in to the store for the enjoyment of our community.

Authors in the Store THIS WEEK

It all kicks off with Greg Stroll on Thursday, July 17th at 7pm. Greg will be doing a reading from his new book "In The Heart Of Fear, One Forgets One's Self " in which he discusses the reality of an illness he lives with daily: Schizophrenia. He will be available for book signings, as well as to answer any questions that you may have about Schizophrenia, and what its like to live through a psychotic episode. All proceeds from this event are to benefit Ami Quebec, and the Canadian Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

On Saturday, July 19th at 1pm we will have a reading and workshop from Brendan Myers, from his new book "The Other Side of Virtue: Where Our Virtues Come From, What They Really Mean, and Where They Might Be Taking Us". Using ancient heroic epics and sagas like Beowulf, the Illiad and Odyssey, the Eddas, the Tain Bo Cuailnge, and literature inspired by them including the works of the Renaissance and Romanticism, Shakespeare, Tolkien, and J.K. Rowling, this book explains the world-view that gave birth to our virtues. In that world-view, life involves inevitable confrontations with inexplicable events like fortune, nature, other people, and death itself. The Workshop will be based on the ideas in the book, a Q & A session, and of course a chance to get signed copies!

New and Exciting!

We received a few very interesting items this week! Among them are the 2009 calendars from Llewellyn. They came EARLY!

More exciting, at least for the academic and those interested in the history of Paganism, is a book by the legendary Aiden Kelly. He first published "Crafting the Art of Magic, Book I: A History of Modern Witchcraft, 1939-1964 (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) " However it is out of print and he indicated that it was not remotely close to the academic sourcebook this new book is. You must all be on the edge of your seats now dying to know what book i am talking about. It just came out!

Inventing Witchcraft: A Case Study in the Creation of a New Religion
Aiden Kelly $29.95 ISBN: 9781870450584
Thoth Publications

A must have in the library of anyone serious about their history and practice.

Happy Everything!

Happy St-Jean Baptiste Day last Tuesday the 24th of June and Happy Canada Day yesterday (July 1st) to those who celebrate them.

In Canada... or mostly in Quebec, July 1st is like a moving extravaganza! You would think that all Quebec folks had gypsy ancentry!

In light of this, I thought I would post some interesting things for those moving and those with gysy heritage.

MOVING ADVICE
Be sure to check the little things (pipes, leaks, outlets, windows, potential pest infestations, locks). Always ask for your locks to be changed when you move in. It is rare these days to be lucky enough to arrive into a clean home as few previous tenants actually are curteous enough to clean before they leave.

MOVING MAGICALLY
Some people will do divination before signing a new lease or buying a new home. This can help give you some insight into the new abode. When you do move, it is wise to do an ultimate house blessing in your home. We offer complete kits for doing just that!

STEP 1: Thoroughly clean your home tops to bottom and inside out!
STEP 2: Take the trash out the back door or out the normal garbage route.
STEP 3: Open the doors and windows, cupboards and closets and sage or cedar smudge the whole house counter-clockwise to purify it of all negativity that might be there from previous tenants.
STEP 4: After the home is thoroughly aired out, Bless your home with a simple water blessing ritual and white candle. Light the white candle in the center of your home and in a bowl of water put three pinches of salt. Then sprinkle every door, windor and corner three times clockwise around the home. You may wish to burn incense or anoint with oils or even prepare a blessing talisman at this time as well. The Ultimate Kit will guide you.
STEP 5: Bring something new into your home. This should be something living like a plant or a pet or something that simply brings you joy.
STEP 6: Protect your home! You can do this by placing crossed willow branches over your front door or place hematite stones in the four farthest corners of your home. You may also wish to anoint your doorframes and window frames with protection oil.
STEP 7: CELEBRATE! Have a house warming party! What better way to liven up your home!

FOR THE GYPSIES

Enjoy the summer and the joys of July!

July Workshops *SNEAK PEEK*

Herbalism 101 (Maery)
Friday July 4th 6-8pm $30

Introduction to Rune Magic (Matt)
Sunday July 13th 1-3pm $30
Most people know the Norse Runes as a powerful system of divination. Our Nordic forebears also used the runes for several other purposes; as charms, wards, and 'spells' on one hand, and as powerful keys to unlocking the secrets of the mysteries on the other. In this workshop we will be focussing on the many uses of the Elder Futhark as a system of divination, magick, and initiatory wisdom into the mysteries of the Nordic world tree.

Either diabetes will take her or the efforts of the people who fight diabetes around the world will see fruition in time. Here is my contribution and best effort to see a cure happen. My name is Greg and I've been fighting my own war for years, only my enemy isn't a person: it's schizophrenia. During my first psychotic episode I undertook this project and I give you my thoughts, my paranoia, my insanity from my own perspective, with my own words. A Word from Our Local Montreal Pagan Community Centre

MPRC: History, Status, and Request

Greetings!

Did you know that the Montreal Pagan Resource Centre will be seven years old this August? Seven years of service to the Montreal pagan community... if you been around any pagan community for awhile, seven years of continuity is practically unheard of.

I've been a volunteer with the MPRC for most of these seven years. There have been peaks and valleys in working with the MPRC, but overall I have to say it has been quite satisfying.

I'll be honest with you though, when I come in for my shift on Thursday nights, it's mostly quiet. But then someone will come into the MPRC with a question, a request, or simply to talk to someone who understands this pagan mindset. It's those nights that keep me coming back.

But this is part of what pagans are: since we don't proselytize, we have to wait until people seek us out. This is why the MPRC is so important in our community, to both pagans and non-pagans: we offer a neutral, safe environment where people can get information and explore their own spirituality with other like-minded folks.

Right now, the MPRC is going through a bit of a lull in terms of volunteers. We only have four volunteers and we need more to keep the MPRC open and available to the public. If we can't get enough volunteers to keep the MPRC open for more that 50% of the time, we may lose the use of our space in Melange Maqique.

Volunteering your time with the MPRC is rewarding. In addition to being a resource to our community, you have:

* access to our library of donated books (many rare and out-of-print
editions)
* access to the Internet from the MPRC computer
* access to local pagan network of contacts
* a 10% discount with Melange Magique (this is NEW!)
* a quiet, pleasant space to work, study, and read

If you would be interested in volunteering, please contact me (jdhobbes (at) yahoo.ca) or Karyn (I will post her email address soon). Our volunteer coordinator will contact you to arrange a meeting with you to discuss the possibilities. Volunteering is completely flexible; you have complete control over how much time you can donate to the MPRC.

Please help us to continue keeping the MPRC alive and well.

What is Montreal Roller Derby?
Flat Track Roller Women's Roller Derby is a women's indoor sport where they are all on quad (4-wheel) roller skates.
Founded in spring 2006 by our own Georgia W Tush with only a handful of hardcore derby girls, MTL Roller Derby (MTLRDL) has quickly grown into three teams of warrior women on wheels and it hasn't gone unnoticed either! Montreal's three local teams include Les Contrabanditas, La Racaille, and Les Fille du Roi and the one all star travel team is New Skids on the Block.

Its growth has been a favourite topic with local press, and the travel team was undefeated in 2007, leading MTLRDL to many more games in 2008. MTLRD currently trains at the Roulatheque, located in the Recreatheque in Laval.

Can anyone spot local the local Pagan? She is in there!

If you are wondering about the guys in the photo, they are referees, skate technicians, and coaches.

Midsummer is just around the corner!

It seems like summer took its sweet time in getting here, and now its suddenly hitting us with a vengeance. Personally, while I love the warmer weather, I could certainly do with a little more RAIN! Here is a little quick spell we can all do to encourage the clouds to open up a little and bring us some lovely rain-showers to cool things down:

You can gather some heather, fern and broom tops to burn outdoors, just a pinch of each will do. As they burn, imagine the clouds gently swelling with nice cool rain. If
you have a rain stick, hold it aloft and let it shake and listen to the soft pattering, imagining it is the sound of the rain all around you. If you don't have a rain stick, simply imagine the sound surrounding you, the feel of it cool and refreshing on your skin. If you have a rain song or chant, go ahead and sing it out! If not, feel free to make one up.
Just please bear in mind, when working with weather magic it is best to do it GENTLY, and not very often.

Don't forget! This sunday, June 15th, is our Midsummer Sabbat Sale! All regularly priced items in store will be 10% off. This offer extends to all our online friends too! When you order this sunday, you will also receive 10% off any orders you make.

As an added bonus, all our children's coloring books and kits will remain on special at 10% off as a nice summer treat for all the young pagans out there, at least until after Midsummer.

New Books of Interest

We just received a bunch of new books. So many of this bunch look amazing. Here is the list of books and some small reviews:

The New Complete Book of Tarot: A step by step guide to reading the cards
By: Juliet Sharman-Burke
Cost: $17.95 ISBN: 031236346x
This is the newly revised training book in tarot. Sharman-Burke has grouped the study of the tarot into 6 or 7 major arcana and a group of minor arcana for each section of study to help spread out the learning. She addresses numerology in relation to the cards, details some of the esoteric symbols and their meanings, and provides you with some idead for clear understanding of the cards. At the end of each section, she has provided interesting and inspiring exercises full of insightful questions anyone should be considering. At the end of the book she gives you a few journal pages to get you started on keeping a tarot reading journal. This book contains the illustrations from Sharman-Caselli deck which is just a stunning and easy to read tarot deck. This book accompanies the deck in the box set. However, we just received the book alone at the store. A worth-while purchase for anyone starting out or revisiting their tarot decks and leaning to read the cards.

Magic That Works: Practical Training for the Children of Light
By: Frances Harrison & Nineveh Shadrach
Cost: $29.95 ISBN: 097359321
At first glance, you would think this is a beginners guide for solitary wiccan practice. Then you are surprised by the hebrew language, the angelic references and the other esoteric material. I certainly was. With some further research I realized this was a book about Middle Eastern and Eastern Magic. It was written for those interested in solitary practice of the Magic Society of the White Flame. You need not specifically be interested in that group to benefit from this book. It draws from Indian, Araibic, Judaic, Lebonese, Indonesian, and many other cultural backgrounds. This book teaches you about Jinns and Angels, different kinds of magical tree systems, rituals, elemntal magic, and planetary magic. While it says it is a book for the beginner, I would consider it more for the intermediate practictioner.

Faith and Magic in the Armed Forces: A Handbook for Pagans in the Military
By: Stefanie Barner
Cost: $18.50 ISBN: 9780738711942
It is about time we see a book of this nature! Military Pagans face very different issues than the average civilian. Their faith is challenged every day as they are moved over and over, deployed overseas, preparing for or actually in combat situations, coming home as veterans, dealing with comrades who have fallen in the field, and widowed families. There are other challenges to the faith of Military Pagans. These are legal issues, religious rights and freedoms issues and more. This book addresses them all. It is divided into sections based on the Witch's Pyramid: To Know, To Will, To Dare, To Keep Silent. In the To Know section, the author addresses isues that anyone considering getting into the military ought to consider (options, rights, training and survival basics), as well as questions to ask superiors. It advises military pagans on what to bring when they are deployed and what they need for survival and spirituality. In the To Will section, tha authro addresses the issues of standing up for what you belive in, the role os service and sacrifice, the willingness to kill and how to congure peace in a culture of war. In the To Dare section, the author raises the issues of courage and daring to deploy, dealing with separation from family and facing confronting danger. The chapter on separation is also helpful for the family that is left behind as it provides discussion and meditations to help them cope, too. In the last section on To Keep Silent, the author explores the issues of coming home. This includes what can be expressed and what cannot, and sometimes the problem of not being able to express what needs to be. The book contains interesting case history stories caller Pagan Perspective written by people in different situations and how they handled them. It also contains prayers, hymns, protections spells, divination techniques, meditations and rituals. How can I possibly recommend this book more? It is amazing! One of the better Llewellyn publications this year!

WITCH SCHOOL SERIES
First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree, and Ritual Theory & Practice
By: Rev. Donald Lewis-HighCorrell
Costs: $22.95 - $34.95
These four books are the training manuals for the Wtch School. They are of the Correllian Tradition. More information about this tradition can be found here: http://www.correllian.com/
These books help the student move through the degrees and understand the tradition, as well as master Wiccan practice within this tradition's framework. The books are good for anyone wishing to study this and are especially beneficial to students registering in the Correllian Wtch School: http://www.witchschool.com/main.asp

Our Trip to Gaia Gathering

We arrived Friday, May 16th, to a beautiful campus. University of Ottawa has the largest campus I have ever seen. It is like a mini city all on its own! We registered and touched base with the main coordinators to learn about where we were going to be setting up for vending. That evening, there was a open hospitality space where we met and spoke with the early arrivals. We set up three mini tables to tease people with our enticing stock from the store.

Among the people we met on the first night were such well known Candian Pagan contributors as:

Lucie Dufresne (one for the main organizers of PFPC and a leading Pagan academic)
Shelly Rabinovitch (another leading academic and an author - An Ye Harm None)
Brendan Myers (an academic author of several books who is having his book launch here on July 19th for The Other Side of Virtue)
Sian Reid (an academic and an author of Between the Worlds: Readings in Contemporary Neopaganism)
Helmut of Helmut's Forge (master blade smith from Hamilton Ontario)
Castalia (an academic and a musician)

Saturday was a very EARLY day of setting up and vending. We discovered the interesting phenomenon of an empty vending room during the talks and a packed and busy vending room in the breaks between the talks. Our vending space was shared with Lucie Dufresne's Hungry Eye shop, Shelly Rabinovitch, Sian Reid & Helmut's Forge, Castalia's music, WynterGreene Magazine, Bruce and his wife with stained glass and silk shirts, and Dan Miller from the Heathen Freehold Society of British Columbia.

Dan Miller was a fascinating person to speak with as we knew very little about British Columbia activities and even less on Heathenism. He will be hosting the 2009 Gaia Gathering. We hope to be there as well! If you want to learn more about him and heathenism, you can hear his lectures on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/user/heathenfreehold .

Speaking this day were some local Pagan's from Quebec: Marisol Charbonneau (an academic from Montreal), Mireille Gagnon (an academic from Quebec City), Emily Rose Michaud (a Montreal environmentalist) and myself Scarlet (mentor, teacher, clergy and academic). Some of the other interesting speakers from across the country were: Bythor (an Edmonton Thelemic Wiccan speaking on Queering Magic) from Alberta; Sheena (Pagan Ecology speaker from Calgary, Alberta); Dan Miller; Shelly Rabinovitch; Lucie Dufresne; Dale Delessio (Ottawa Hospital Clergy and Pagan Parenting advisor); Lee Ann Farruga and Patrick Gilliland (the Ottawa keynote speakers about Pagan Parenting).

We met attendees from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and all over Ontario and Quebec. It was a great opportunity to connect with folks across the country!

We closed Saturday with a great dinner at the Vietnamese Kitchen Restaurant, where we sat and chatted with friends both old and new. This casual time was best for forging friendships with our Pagan celebrities and folks around the country. My own close friends arranged the booking for the dinner, only for them (Marie and Rick) to give birth later that night (4:21AM)! Congrats!! He was obviously not attending Sunday's events are speaking at the Panel he was leading that day. We were planning on going on one of the Ottawa Haunted Tours, but a flash storm negated that possibility.

Sunday was likewise incredible! We were again vending early and enjoying the company of our co-vendors. Today's talks included more local folks: Hobbes of the MPRC and our own Melange Magique (Magical Blend) manager, Robyn! Other great speakers this day included: Richard James of the WCC and Toronto Occult Shop, and Farrell McGovern of the ADF Ottawa branch, along with many other Druids from around the country.

I want to take this moment to thank Lucie Dufresne and Lisa Crandall and all their other assistances for making this conference happen at University of Ottawa. I would also like to thank Bruce for all his lovely company and help when we packed up Sunday evening.

We tried to attend the closing dinner, however, the little local restaurant was too packed with... everybody... from the conference. We would have liked to be at the Gaia Gathering Annual General Meeting, but we are home and in our store ... OPEN for the Victoria Day holiday Monday.

If you ever get the chance, We highly recommned attending the events and conferences in and around your area or boldly traveling out to an event farther from home. The opportunity to meet people and discover new traditions and people is invaluable! Thank you Gaia Gathering.

Scarlet
~~~~~~
Robyn's afterthoughts:
Going to Pagan festivals has been a new thing for me this year, and Gaia Gathering was yet another great way to meet other Pagan folk, to network for business and pleasure, and to see what else is going on elsewhere as well as to come home with lots of new and exciting ideas.
I, like Scarlet, had a nice time at Gaia Gathering. It was relaxing and fun, the mood very upbeat and the company fascinating. I particularly enjoyed re-connecting with some of the folk I'd met at the Toronto Pagan Conference earlier this year, as well as making new friends from across Canada.
There are a few more festivals coming up that I'm looking forward to attending as well: Echoes, Wic-Can Fest (maybe?), Kaleidoscope and the Hamilton Pagan Pride Festival. Who knows, maybe I'll meet YOU there!
Store Staff @ Gaia Gathering Conference
Robyn & Scarlet will be attending the Gaia Gathering Conference (also known as the National Canadian Pagan Conference) held in Ottawa this year. They will be speaking on three seperate panels. Look below for details! Hope to see you there!
We will also be VENDING! Come and visit our vending table and your purchases will be TAX FREE!
WHAT IS GAIA GATHERING?
Gaia Gathering is the National Canadian Pagan Conference, now in its FOURTH year.
It is a "peer-to-peer" Conference, rather than a festival or "camp". Pagans from across Canada share their experiences, exchange information and learn from and with each other. The Conference is based on the principle of dialogue and discussion, rather than the "leaders and learners" workshop/seminar model.
"Peer-to-peer" means a large portion of conference programming consists of moderated panels and round tables of participants discussing subjects they themselves suggest. Panelists from all across Canada volunteer to participate together in areas of personal interest or expertise, and the panel may or may not have a designated "facilitator" who has helped pull that panel topic together. Topics, ideas, suggestions all mix together to assist the Board in constructing the event that the participants want to attend.
This spell comes to us from our own Maery: (I have put all the ingredients and tools you will need in bold for clarity's sake).
Perform this spell in the evening on a Friday. Light an orange candle, and some apple blossom incense. Use a blade to carve your initials into a piece of copper (a cleaned up old penny will do) and place it into a chalice. Fill your chalice with real apple juice and add a pinch of rosemary and cinnamon. Stir this mix with the blade 4 times. Let this drink sit outside until the candle and incense have burnt out completely. While the candle burns, use this time to visualize: Think of your strengths and accept your flaws. Once done all this, drink down the mix, being careful not to swallow the copper piece. You will carry this copper piece with you for one full lunar cycle (until the moon is in the same phase as when you did this spell) and then bury it near your home.
